    Sub jargon

For people like me that are not sub oriented, how can I learn what some of the language means. Also how many of the holes in my Revell VII need to be opened? So far I have opened 112 holes each side. What are limberholes? I have about 15 Sub Commiitee back issues that are very helpful but not in the above Questions.

    Hi Cadman,

    Hi Cadman,

Welcome. Those holes along the upper sides of your U-boat model which you so painstakingly opened are called 'Limber holes'. These holes allow water to freely enter and drain out under the 'casing'. The 'casing' is built around or usually on top of the hull. The 'casing' is a superstructure giving the pressure hull within it's surface boat like outer shape. 'Flood and drain' holes typically are located along the bottom of the outer hull. These holes allow water into the ballast tanks to fill or drain them, or also the superstructure casing from the bottom. Good question. Here to help.

Thanks Steve! Wow, I now have all my limber holes open and didnt know it. This still means I have to open some or all the lower holes for drain purposes? One hole looks as if it were a grill of sorts. What is this for? What about the other areas that look like square plates? Do I need to open only the holes that are indented?

      Thanks again

          Dick,

There are a series of small flood holes on the under side of the bow, just forward of the keel. There are also a series of similar holes aft around the prop shaft supports. The actual pattern and size of these holes varied, depending on which yard built the sub. If you are building a generic boat.....pick what looks good to you. If you are building a specific boat... try to find a yard shot of that boat (difficult) or at least one built at the same yard (easier).

Strictly speaking you do not need to open these holes in the model to allow the water to drain out. Instead you can make a series of holes in the bottom of the keel itself. Since no one is likely to see them, don't worry about prototypical 'correctness'. On my Type VII, I have a single 3/4-inch diameter hole in the aft part of the keel. It really needs 3 or four more!

Regarding the 'square plates'.....which ones are you referring to?

            Thanks Jeff, That helps alot.

Thanks Jeff, That helps alot. The square "holes" are the ones on the "bluge" (looking at the right side). There are fouron the aft end and four more forward of the louvered opening. There are also one and a space and three more approx midships at the keel.

            Thanks again
