    Ballast tanks

Can someone give me an idea on how to calculate the approx capacity needed for a ballast tank? This will be for the Revell VII sub.

      oops sorry that last calculation

oops sorry that last calculation is wrong
      try this one

40/9.4248= length = 4.244 this would be rounded to 4 inches

      sorry again
and if I got this one wrong I should quit my day job

        "1 approximate the weight of

"1 approximate the weight of everything above the waterline, this amount it converted to cubic inches of water and the result is used to determine the size of the tank"

It's not the WEIGHT of everything above the waterline but the DISPLACEMENT. There's a big difference. A 1 inch square block of aluminum will weigh a whole lot less than a 1 inch square block of lead but both have the same displacement.

"the 2nd is to complete the boat except the ballast tanks and components then trim the boat to submerged waterline, now use foamstrips or blocks placed under the boat and held by rubber bands keep doing this until you achieve a scale surfaced waterline.then compute the volume of the foam and this number gives you of the tank needed."

The best way to determine capacity of the ballast tank but this way also determines the correct LOCATION.
