channel expanding - has anyone seen this or done this

_I got this one one of the homebre rc sites***************************____
A large number of R/C modelers are electronics literate to a certain extent. Those who have an understanding of electronics can easily gain the three (3) missing channels of their typical 4 - channel transmitter if it uses a Phillips NE5044 or the older Signetics number CD8081.
To enable an additional channel, one of the pins, either 5, 6, and 7, must be freed. These pins are grounded by Futaba to disable the unused channels. Once freed, components can be added to utilize the channel.
To add a simple on/off type channel, the schematic in Figure 1 is used with the components listed in the table.

i'm sure you could, but

i'm sure you could, but i dunno why you would. the subs that people build here are HUGE where space/weight is not important. just like waterproofing is to submarines, light weight and small size is to micro helis. i guess if you needed an extra few cubic centimeters of space, this channel expanding mod would be worth your while. just like Hornet, Robin, and Piccolo set the stage for micro helis, i'm sure its only a matter of time before full static diving subs less than 22" are available

oh, and that GWS rx

oh, and that GWS rx is single conversion. i assume you sub builders want dual conversion rx's? or mayb there's some technical explanation that says otherwise...

If it

Hi Guys]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_smile.gif[/img]
If it is of any support to your discussion, the NE5044 is an encoder IC and was used from 1982-1995 and has a maximum of 7 inputs. Although you can find a few devices around, they are a bit difficult to locate.
Most newer receivers are capable of 8 channels. With dual conversion features, etc. it's probably much better to go with a newer type of receiver/transmitter combo. Al, at Ships n' Things, can add the 8th channel if you find it necessary.

Best, Ed
