US WWII Fleetboat Underhull Details - Seawater Suction Photos/Drawings

To all,
Anybody out there in model land got a source of Gato/Balao MSW and ASW suction hull strainer pictures, either photos or drawings??
Drydock pictures from any of the museum ships of these types showing the areas in question would be very helpful, too.

Yup! Got it a long time ago. As nice a reference as it is, it is very generic. I'm in the process of doing the hull details, positioning the flood holes, flood valves, drain holes,and sea connections. The docking plan I have shows the general shape of these large strainer plates, but no other info is provided. I figure if I'm going to build a nice model, I might as well try to be as accurate as I can.

Bill, I just recently visited

Bill, I just recently visited the USS Lionfish in Fall River Mass and after reading your post I played a hunch and checked out thier website. Low and behold the Lionfish was last dry docked in 98/99. Maybe the museum has photos of her while in the dry dock. could'nt hurt to check. on a lighter note I too work for E.B. and would be very interested in getting together with you at your liesure and checking out some of the information you have on fleet boats. These are my passion, I tried to get the book from floating dry dock but they are'nt going to print any more copies(bummer). I'd like to find out where to find copies of the actual construction drawings used by E.B. or even (dare I say) Portsmouth. These too are hard to pin down. I'll e-mail you from work and give you my contact info if you would like.

Hi Brian Starkes here I to am lookimg for such info , I have The Drydocks Print and they do not show what we are looking for! I could make you a copy if you think The Floating Drydock would not mind? I was thinking Gene Burger or Mr. Upshaw may be abel to help, I am getting close to scribing my GATO model and will need this info! D merriam may have this info as well, if he dont who els would!! I have a original training manual for the fleet boat and it does show this stuf but hard to guess persion placement! I can fax you a copy if it will help! The National Archives typically has construction drawings (as well as pics, etc) for this class of boats on microfilm. If you provide them with the hull number, they will let you know what is available. I believe you want to contact Record Group 19 (I posted this info on a separate thread, but the details escape me at the moment. Possibly an answer to Silversides....). I can confirm the info I have when I get home.

All the extant fleet boat

All the extant fleet boat hulls on concrete piers, (Drum), and in drydock (pampanito, ect.) have all these openings welded over with "boilerplate" so it's very difficult to ascertain the exact shape.
