    Disney Nautilus paiint color

    Hello,

Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the Disney Nautilus color. I see lots with a black base color with heavy rust. OK but, I always thought it was more green with rust. But what color green? Any ideas?

That will be a debate no matter what colors you put on......
So here are a couple of movie shots.

Have fun, it is a wonderful looking submarine.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Bob Martin at Nautilus Drydocks has several videos on painting and weathering the Nautilus.

        Team,

Thanks for the responses. I have watched Bob Martin's videos and I do like how he builds and paints the model so will follow his videos. I also saw a video of David Merrimans that had a greener colored Nautilus that I liked. I'll do some tests and see how it looks on cardboard and work from there. To me the many examples on the web show a very brown model and I just think it should be a green color. Not sure what green but not dark green.

The movie had the Nautilus in no less than three different color variations. My personal preference is to mimic the hull of the full sized deck set. I use a base of dark silver, highlight the panel lines lightly with an airbrush, then wash the entire thing with rusting solution.

At the end of the day, the correct color is whatever you think it should be. It's your boat. If people don't like it, they can buy their own kit and paint it themselves.!

              Bob,

You are correct. I am wanting to match the green color I saw at Disney world Orlando back long ago. Hopefully, I can find a good color to work with. I think Olive will be too dark. Perhaps a medium green, I'll have to do some testing on cardboard.

I'm also watching Nautilus drydocks as I will be looking to purchase the light set soon. Also will need to save up for a WTC.

Instead of looking for green colors you might look for copper oxidized colors
Here is an image of copper oxidation over 30 years.

I used Alclad2 Lacquers on my NAUTILUS model. I used Steel #112 as a base coat. Various areas were sprayed with Burnt Iron #121, Exhaust Manifold #123, and Pale Burnt Metal #104.

                        Guys,

Thanks for the info gents. I'm not looking for as green a color as the Statue of Liberty, but more along the lines of what Ralph has for 5 to 7 years in his paint chip sample. I suppose we can work along the lines the nautilus would have been made from iron and painted to keep it from rusting. Possibly painted green as camouflage? Maybe like a sunfish or Bass with dark stripes as well as the base green color. As time at sea tends to do it would have faded and began to rust. Chip's model looks good, especially the little fish following it in the first picture. Is that Bob or Nemo the fish? Maybe something like this... Click image for larger version

The little clown fish and the squid are from Safari Ltd. I filleted the clown fish and glued the two halves to the Lexan rudder extension.
