Attention Pool Toy Sub fans - New one at the Discovery Channel store

I was killing time at the airport the other day waiting for a flight and wandered into the Discovery Channel Store. I noticed that they have a new Pool sub that is larger (8" or so) than the tiny ones you see on eBay and has fully rotatable thrusters on the side. It looks goofy, but you might be able to do something with it - for $29.95.

    Hi Tim,

    FYI for anyone interested.

    Hi Tim,

FYI for anyone interested. This same sub was/is available at Radio Shack for the same price. The side thrusters move up and down via the transmitter but I understand that there are possible leaking problems around some seals. A little creative use of grease solves the problem.

I saw a USS Dallas at Wal Mart the other day that looked pretty neat. Has working planes best I could tell.

        The Wal-Mart Motorworks submarines don't

The Wal-Mart Motorworks submarines don't have operable rudder or dive planes. It operates by using a "pull down" motor and it is reversable to surface. Left and right turns are accomplished also with thruster and forward speed is by a prop imbedded in the hull. Some guys have made modifications by extending the shaft to give better performance, etc.

        See ya at Indy!

        Regards,

          Yes, the same sub is

Yes, the same sub is available at Radio Shack, I don't remember the price exactly (either 29$ or 49$ ). I don't see the difference between this one and the Nikko Sea Tiger subs, maybe it's the size or did Radio Shack just "re-introduce", the idea?

            I can answer alot of

            Tim
I can answer alot of questions about this unit..
It's a radio Shack unit, goes for $21 and they do leak worse than an old S class boat! I have seal mine up with heavy grease ans the biggest part might have been around the front led, I fixed it, then the front seal, I fixed it as well, then the the pod motors started to have gear drive problems which causes the sub to either quit running or so go on a deep dive
that it keeps trucking to the bottom! I'm about to ripe the guts out of this toy an dput it to good use in somehting else.
and the range is either good or bad, it seems to not be able to make up its mind. The Nikko Shark I have is half the size and runs much better with much more control than the radio shack unit. My DAllas and Chicago units I can't cmplain about, my new Wife loves playing with them so now we both have one to play with. I just finished with my newest target, I mean Surface ship the H.M.S. HOOD the other night, looks to be a nice Cruiser for the open pond or small lake but I will find out soon enough it is will run wiht my Big boys.
Tyler has picked up the USS New Jersey to go with his The Mighty Mo' so next time we all get together I hope to have it ready to show off

              I got one of these

I got one of these "pool subs" off of ebay a while back. Quite a sharp looker, actually, and at a delivered price of $12 not a bad investment. I stripped all of the cheesy decals off of it, added some really cool looking oversized rivets, and primed her gray.

Now the bad news. I couldn't get more than 6' of range in perfectly clear freshwater at a small fish pond nearby. Performance when she was working was excellent, but the lack of reliable range made it bad to play with.

Decided to paint her up, and that's when she died a horrible death (cosmetically). Turns out the green paint that I had was actually lacquer-based, and the gray paint beneath wrinkled and peeled and.... it was bad.

I'll be pulling all of the components to use in other projects. Worst case scenario... I got a bunch of cool gears, motors, a small receiver and a transmitter for $12.
