    R&R Model Engineering WTC

Something very exciting showed up at my house today from the UK! Ron at R&R built me a somewhat customized pumped tank unit for my 1/96 Thors Permit. I had been thinking about one since I had seen one of his piston tank versions. After Jim showed me his 70 mm unit for his 1/144 Seawolf I decided to go for it.

First impression is that it looks pretty awesome. I especially like that the entire unit is basically a tray that slides into an outer WTC. The forward tray also has a nice set up to drop in the battery. This is an 80 mm diameter unit that is normally 540 mm long, but to fit in my Permit Ron shortened it to 500 mm. I did a test fit and its pretty much spot on. It came with 2 servos, drive motor, pump, battery, and magnetic linkage connectors. I will need to figure out how to power and control the pump, as well as where to place the ESC and receiver.

I initially wanted to rush installation, but I have decided to stick with my older WTC for now, and take it to a SubComEast build day. Or what I like to call peer review to prevent expensive dumb mistakes.

I will need to do a few mods to the Permit for fitment, including shortening the driveshaft and moving the shaft bulkhead further aft, redoing the steering linkages, and removing the current locating pin and figure out how to do location with the new unit. I also need to install the new snorkel, which will actually fit in the Permit Sail!!! Sadly I will retire my Rube Goldberg inspired home made pink snorkel.

I am using one of Ron's units in a Seawolf and find using a Mtronics speed controller for pump operation works well just use the 15A viper.

        Mike,

The pump that Ron uses in his dive modules is the same one that he uses in his Aquabat kits. Both Jim and I use mTroniks 10 Amp speed controllers. Actually, we use two of them: one for the pump snd one for the drive motor.

          Hi CdoGunner,
What size controller are you using for your drive motor?

Hey Jeff, do you know if the aqubat motor is the same as the Jim's unit for his Seawolf? I might reuse the ESC that is in my Permit right now, its a Sub-10 40 amp unit.

            Mike,

It definitely is the same pump used in both. Jim had a problem with the pump in his R&R dive module and I gave him the one from my Aquabat as a replacement. (Ron then sent me a replacement)

10 amp Mtroniks and the pump unit for both dive systems Seawolf/Aquabat/Gato is the same as is the drive motor. I think the pump unit is the same as the windscreen washer pump used in Peugeot/Citroen vehicles. Do remember to remove the central wire from the ESC for the pump unit control. Ron s also producing a WTC for the ArkModel Type 7 and has in development a unit for the Trumpeter HMS Astute plus a R Class Boomer which from the prototype looks really very very good and will no doubt result in me being less than truthful to the Chief of Staff (Mrs CdoGunner) as to cost.
