    My Nautilus design 3d printed

Howdy all; I have been a Verne/Nautilus fan since childhood, and have been creating 3d render files of the Nautilus since 2003. Recently I got into 3d printing, and it wasn't long before I started to think about whether or not I could print my Nautilus design, so I set to work. Today I printed the last hull section and assembled all the pieces. It would seem that this is a great way to build models. Just wanted to share. I settled on 1/42 scale because my build platform is only 8 x 8, so that was as big as I could make it. I was a little disappointed to find that 1/42 is a bit too small to allow good prints of the various interior fixtures and furnishings, so I had to abandon the plan of building a half-model that showcase the interior, but the exterior model has worked out OK. Several people have asked me if I am planning to make it an RC model but that is a bit beyond me...although perhaps it could be provided in kit form for thos who might like to try?
Also I am wondering if anyone here could give me some leads on sites or forums that would help me figure out a way to market it, or if there is any future in that idea.
    Thanks!

Great photo and idea I just got my 3d printer working yesterday and I am taking a on line course for SketchUp.
Love your sub, do you sell just the files?
Did you try RCBob he is on here and you can google him
    Nice job

Very nice interpretation of Verne's description of the boat from the book. Would love some more pics. Sounds like an article for the SCR, LaRue?
      Warm regards,

        Excellent idea, Paul!

i think folks would really enjoy reading an article on the process of creating a 3D model and then printing it.

what do you think, VerneMan? Interested?

HaHa! You bet Jeff! I've already started to write it! Plan to self-publish on Amazon when done.

Thanks Bill. I've sold files before, but what the heck, why not, right? I need to copyright this stuff before I can start disseminating it and that's in progress.
This model has about 60 files all told associated with it, lots of small stuff that is printed and put together. That's a lot to keep track of. Do you have any idea what a collection of files like that would go for? I have no clue. I created the content mostly in Bryce7pro and exported those files as OBJ's, then imported them into 3d builder so I could convert them into STL files.

I'd also be glad to post the content here after it's polished up, but it will probably run a lot of pages, is that ok or were you thinking of something more compressed?

                    VerneMan,

Looking forward to an article....there are a number of members that are either interested in or already darling in 3D printing.

You can send me text and photos at your convenience. Partial or complete...it's your call. We'll take care of doing the formating.

We can run any length of article. If need be, we can run it as a multi-issue article.

                    -tnx,
                    Jeff

Nice work. What did you print them on? I've done two of my hull as 3d prints. both are fiction subs. One I bet you've never heard of so no reason to mention it the other is the Red October based on the screen model. 60 inches is huge. Mine were only both in the 22" range. Although I am working on one that is 36"+/- but 60" is huge.

Yes 60" is pretty good sized; in the beginning planning stages I made a couple prints of areas that had a lot of detail to help me determine what scale to shoot for; that's when I discovered that smaller than 1/50th, much of the detail either vanished or became blurry, so I settled on 1/42 because with my printer resource that was the smallest I could go and get acceptable results.
I bought 4 Anet-8's ( because they were dirt cheap and with a print time of 30+ hours per hull segment, [ 24 segments] it would obviously take forever to do the job with just one printer...) and worked then 24/7 for a couple months to get the first hull prototype done. [ lots of mis-prints, discoveries of file issues, machine problems, etc. ]
Then I befriended Bob at Nautilus Drydocks and he clued me in on the more preferred scales, so I am now re-printing the hull at 1/48th, after re-editing some of the files ( thicker fins, bolder details, enough so that the finer detail isn't lost) and have added some things, like LED light fixture lenses/bezels around the salon and Dive lock, LED lights inside the Helm and deck light, and modifications to the longboat/ it's nest. I must say, it seems as though this is a project that will never be really finished... My A8's all died in the process of the first series of prints and I just ordered a Ender-3 printer to start with the 1/48th scale version. If it produces good quality I'll order a few more.
A labor of love....Click image for larger version
