    Fitting on the bow of a German Delphin sub

    Hi all,

    I am trying to figure out what the little dome fitting is on the bow of the experimental Delphin submarine.

    If it was on a torpedo, I would assume its the detonator, but that would be a nasty surprise for the pilot of the Delphin!

    Would it be some sort of speed sensor maybe? I have seen some cross section drawings, but none show anything going up to the tip of the bow.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    The boat was designed so that it could run at high speed (up to 18 knots) on the opponent. Shortly before the collision, the boat driver was forced out of the vehicle with a lever pressure, while the now unmanned dolphin continued to hit the target to detonate the 1200 kg explosive charge in the bow. As an alternative to the explosive charge was also experimented with torpedoes and mines as armament.

    Nose = impact fuze

      Interesting, thanks! I had only known about the torpedo carrying experiments.
