    ThorRobotics MARIANA

    Hi there,

just by coincidence I had the chance to acquire this little sub for just a few bucks.

    Some technical specs:
    • Dynamic diving.
    • Length: 256 mm (10 “).
    • Mass: 800 g (28 oz).
    • RC: 2,4 GHz (proportional).
    • FPV video: 5,8 GHz.
    • Front HD color camera (1280 x 1024).
    • 10 white LEDs around camera (controlled by switch) for dusk / night operation.

Cable length between sub and antenna float (max. operating depth): 3 m (appr. 10 ft).

RC- and video signals received / transmitted via lambda/4 stub antennas (enough stuff for experiments, e.g. using circular polarized cloverleaf antennas to add some dB gain).

Original antenna float was a plastic duck; replaced by a styrofoam ball (I guess people would giggle, watching me at the lake while “running a small RC duck” ).

The sub’s original static trimming was too conservative (pronounced positive buoyancy). Some 115 g (4 oz) of lead in the rear section required in order to keep just the conning tower levelled above the surface.

Initial transmitter programming was totally wrong, but could easily be corrected (presumably main reason for the low price).

Underwater scenery can be observed in real-time by one of my FPV receivers plus a small monitor and/or FPV goggles.

However, I need a digital recorder for saving videos on a SD card (only some € 35).

Next week this little critter will be launched for the first time to discover the underwater world of our local pond.

I am totally aware that this is not a serious RC sub, but it was quite cheap and it can easily serve as a nice toy during weekend excursions to the Alps with their crystal clear waters.

Question: Does anyone have experience with this little device ?

    Thanks in advance !

    Cheers

    Volker
