    SMW (Manley) 3.25" CYLINDER SEALS

    Gents,

Had a good day yesterday! After many frustrating years, I finally got my Marlin trimmed out and fully operational!!! However, there is always a down-side. Mine is that I end up with water in the cylinder. The past two runs have revealed 1-2 tablespoons at the end of the run. After the first run, last month, I re-greased every seal. I always seal the o-ring seams with 'lectrical tape for extra good measure.

Does anyone have experience replacing the seals in a Manley cylinder? How is it done, and what do I use??

    Take care,

The seals I need to replace are for the shaft and the servo rods in the ballast tank and the stern cap. The big O-rings seem to be ok.

      Bill,

They're just small o-rings. Take the stern cap off, and remove the servos. Remove the servo arms from the tops of the shafts, then push the shafts and square adapter blocks into the stern cap. Then gently remove the o-rings, grease the cavities, and replace with new ones. I'll try to remember to measure them for you, but I think they're 1/8" ID.

Same for the ballast tank one. Remove the servo, remove the shaft and adapter, and r&r the o-ring.

I'd replace the o-ring on the battery compartment to main cylinder connection while you're there.

Thanks, Jim! Where I was headed. Wasn't sure if the O-rings were glued in or not. The beast will get new rings!

When you pull out the o-rings, if they stick, there may have been a drop of CA used. David told me a few years ago about using CA sometimes.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
