Starting to trim my U47, pretty low in the water to start with supplied weight. Decks wash.... I need to raise it a bit, is it better to remove some weight or add foam to raise it up?
I would add foam because it will make it more stable. If you are talking about the Robbe kit, it is designed to be almost deck awash since it is a dynamic diver.
Adding either foam or weight can make it more stable. In general.....since you are building the U-47 as a dynamic diver you are going to end up trading off adding more foam (more freeboard) causing the boat to need a faster speed to submerge vs. more weight (lower freeboard) causing the boat to need a slower speed to submerge.
Since we're talking about a Type VII U-boat, I would recommend that if you choose to add foam to try to place it in the saddle tanks as that will provide the best roll stability.
The good thing about those dual prop fleet boats is that you don't get torque-induced roll like the single prop boats with a big central propeller. You can get away with less static stability (though having it is always a good thing).
