Suggestion on how to make a part.

    Folks,
I need to make two more saddles shown in the attached photo. I need suggestions on how to make them them and what material to use. I do not have any fancy saws, just hand saws. They will go into a 1/96 Blueback.....

    Thx
    Farlan.

    Farlan,
I would bond 2 or 3 layers of 1/16" sheet plastic together.
Scribe the inside circle and outside circle on the plastic.

I would drill a hole in the center to allow for a long bolt.
Chuck it up in my drill press and turn the out side circle to size.
Remove the bolt and cut out the inside circle close tot he line and then using a Dremel drum sander, finish the inside circle to the line and test fit the cylinder in the hole.
Once it fit, cut the plastic circle in half giving me two upper and two lower saddles.
Using the Drum sander I would put the half circle notch in the upper and lower frames for water and air draining.
    =====================
    What are the dimensions?
Inside diameter = cylinder outside diameter.
Outside diameter = inside diameter of hull.

    How thick is the frame?

I may have scrap plastic pieces big enough to make these.

Get some Play-doh and casting resin from Hobby Lobby or Walmart. Flatten out the Play-doh in a plastic container large and deep enough to leave a 1/2" or so space around the saddle. Put a light coating of Vaseline on the original saddle before pressing it into the Play-dough so you can get it out easily, press the saddle into it so it lays flat and even with the top of the Play-doh, remove the saddle and mix and pour the casting resin into the depression in the Play-doh. Let it cure and then remove and repeat the process for the second one. Re-do the Play-doh as needed and repeat the process. Use some super glue to put small pieces of plastic on the original part to aid in removal, using a SMALL amount of glue so that they can be removed easily.

          Farlan,
I will glue up some sheet plastic today and clamp it over nite.
          Tomorrow, I will make a 3 1/8" diameter ring with a 2 1/2" hole in the center.
I will make 2 notches at 180 degrees apart.
You should be able to make two saddles from the ring.

I will not cut the ring in half as that may not be what you need.

I will update as I progress.

                  Finished parts for Farlan

                  Two complete circle frames.
Gives you 4 half frames once they are cut.

                      Thanks, Sam.
Some times I think I want to buy a lathe.
Then I count the number of parts I have made that a lathe would have been useful.
I can not justify the cost of a lathe.
I have had the drill press for years.
                      Since the 60's.
Make it work for it's place in my shop.

So far the only part I could not make and had done by a friend was a bronze bearing that went in the flywheel for an automatic transmission in a jeep I owned.
Maybe a few others I made work a rounds.

I try to post how I make things so others can do the same if they have to make do with what they have in the shop.

Farlan must have read this thread.
I got an e-mail saying he could come by and pick them up.

He has been here and the frames with some other things have left the building.
Now, Farlan has work to do. ;^)

Wondering, did the parts work for what you needed them for?
                          Where they the right size?

                              That's good news.
                              -------------
After I saw the actual part, I was thinking my parts might be a little small in overall diameter.
But I gave you plastic strips just in case you had to build the diameter up.

Either way, I am glad they worked.
