Not sure how your boat is set up but here goes nothing.

Tail cone of boat has propeller shaft bushing installed.
The propeller pushes against the bushing to push the boat forward.

On the other end of the shaft the dog bone connector is installed so that there is a support just behind it with another bushing for the propeller shaft.

Boat going forward the propeller pushes on tail cone bushing.
In reverse, the dog bone connector half pushes on the shaft support bushing.

      Suggestion.
Grind a small flat on the propeller shaft where the dog bone connector will tight up on.
Also, slide an o-ring on the propeller shaft near the back end.
This will keep the shaft from sliding out should the dog bone connector come loose and the propeller tries to pull the shaft out the back of the boat.
I did this after seeing several propellers with their shafts escape from the boats while running in reverse in deep water where they could not be recovered.
