Ok. I got everything working! I had a bad servo. This was evidenced by it smoking!!!!! Now, next question. How do I tell if a servo is in a neutral posotion???????
Servo neutral or centered.
------------
I test servo by plugging the servo in to one of the channels that is on a stick with centering springs.
Crud but works for me.

Without it being connected? Hard to do. I bought a little servo-tester online. You just hook it up to a 6V battery pack, connect it to the servo, and it allows you to cycle it between endpoints, adjust the position, etc. They're cheap and easy to use. They're about $7 on Amazon if you search for "servo tester".
