    Guidance - WTC

    Hi,

    I need some guidance regarding WTC´s. Which of these products do you recommend for the Los Angeles Class from RCSubs (https://www.rcsubs.cz/index.php/mode...angeles-1-72)?

    1 - OTW "pump system" http://www.otwdesigns.com/products/c...ve-components/

    2 - R&R Model enginering "piston system" http://www.rcsubs.co.uk/our-products

    There is a big difference to the price between the two systems, so I need some help here
    Is there some other systems do you prefer?

    You're set on a UK-originating system?

    I have no experience with the R&R systems (yet), but OTW makes a beautiful dive module. Could also do the Nautilus Drydocks system, which is around $560 with global shipping options.

    The 72nd LA is about 5.5" in beam. A sizeable boat that offers lots of options for a drive system. I'd think a 3.5" cylinder would be perfect for it. The 4.25" from OTW would be just a bit too fat for a comfortable fit, allowing for ballast and foam installation.

    (NOTE: For the sake of transparency, consider that I offer Oto's kits, OTW's cylinders, as well as my line of SubDrivers. Take my advice as you will...)

      Thanks Bob. I wonder about the precision in OTW´s system. I´m familiar with the Engel piston system and the accuracy in depth-control.

        Both the R&R and OTW systems are pretty much equally "accurate' in terms of controlling the amount of water in the ballast tank. With either you control a motor (on/off) that causes the water to move in or out of the ballast tank. Fine adjustments are possible by 'blipping' the motor to add/remove small amounts of water to get s desired trim.

        An Engel piston system that uses the Hall effect sensor option offers better repeatability. With this system a given position of the transmitter control (e.g.: knob or slider) always results in the same amount of water in the ballast tank. It's what I've come to call "Dial-a-Depth"....

        That said, all three ballast systems provide excellent usability for our model R/C subs.

          The R&R units are excellent, but they may not have enough of a ballast tank/s to move a boat this large. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that. IMHO, go with a 3.5" OTW unit. I have one in my 1/72 Seawolf, with a 6" ballast tank... roughly the same size boat, and it makes for a very realistic performance.
