No argument if this works for your preferred sailing style. However, for those of us that do more of the 'deep submergence' (especially using indoor pools), this is not an acceptable option. To really move forward and 'leave the old behind' I'd be looking at the 433MHz-based solution.

Here is southern California, we gather every once in a while.
      SubRonLA
      Next gathering is Sept.
      But you asked about Mike.
      He was out July 16th.
I understand, he and Will meet once a week and run their boats.
Here's a photo from a few months ago.
Mike Dory, Jeff Porteous and Steven Neill looking over the boats Steve brought out. (don't know the gentleman in blue)

        Thanks Ralph!
        That's good to hear!

If anyone see's him soon let him know myself, Rich Kohlbrecher, Ray Mason and the rest of us on the East Coast miss him and he's often fondly discussed when we meet. (A fan club lol)

        Thanks!

BTW, I have family in Diego...plan to visit next year some time and would love to meet up with SoCal SUBmariners.

            Thanks!

Yes, That's my 1992 DeBoer (NOT BeBoer lol) 80" SEAVIEW hanging to the right. She is currently in refit (JOB ON HOLD!!), details here:
I'm back, and the "Big Girl" returns!
I put her on hold to complete SHARK by September's run at Groton.
BTW, in the first thread entry, below the picture of me with the SEAVIEW, is this very same SHARK running submerged on a circumnavigation of North lake at the Sub Base in Groton, close aboard the old dive platform.

The other boat hanging is the DeBoer 1/48 Scale USS NAUTILUS SSN 571. Next years project:

Absolutely Jeff....it should be application driven. I was just reinforcing to never be afraid of new things. Like we say in the CGAUX, it's not enough to be flexible, we must be fluid!

I have two boats without mast's, NAUTILUS and PROTEUS. They need to run at depth.

433Mhz..interesting, is that a reality? Obviously "not in the know" here.

                SHARK update: 2016-08-16
Many thanks to Frederick Swendsen, (hereafter to be known as "The Swede" even though he's Norwegian like me so just sit back and enjoy the "Hell on Wheels" reference!) for offering up the newly cast two-piece stern planes to replace the out of character single piece that originally comes with the DeBoer kit. Not only does it give her a more accurate look, but hopefully she won't "porpoise" now on anything above a 2/3rd's bell due to hydrodynamic flutter on the planes.
Looks like she'll be done this weekend! Trimming in Groton lol!!

If the planes solve this control issue and I can open her up for real, I just may "land" a submerged speed record lol...not that that's the goal of course.

                      Cool,

A new item to learn! (Absolutely no sarcasm here, getting my nerd on!)

I've been pushed to get my HAM for years, from HAM friends AND the USCGAUX.

Now it appears I have a real reason.

Well....since I'm committed to the 2.4Ghz for now, here the latest from last night.

                        SHARK update: 2016-08-31:

YES, these scopes and mast's are NOT to scale but it's what I have, and need, to run deeper than sail "awash" at times when the power boats "frak" with me. They sound like such angry hornets.....

The working Snorkel mast for air induction to surface will self raise and lower as the model surfaces or dive.

Not entirely committed to the look of the 2.4Ghz antenna, then again nothing else is scale.

Ed, not to gush over your scopes, but wow that is really a good modification! How are you managing to raise and lower your induction Snorkel?
I like this and look forward to seeing how it runs.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

The short answer......, it's so light, it floats.

KISS principle. (Tattooed on my left tuchus check, the right is emblazoned with Murphy's law...sorry TMI)

Thin walled Carbon Fiber tube, close cell foam, and 1/8" OD PVC tube for support. Thin walled 3/4" Heat shrink tubing finishes it up.

This all slides over a brass tube inside the sail, which I hope it will ride up an down on. The tolerances are pretty loose.

Hopefully when she dives, it comes up, when it surface it goes back in. All thanks to the very water she floats in.

Never tried it before, so we'll see soon. My only concern is that too great a vacuum is generated as the water is drawn from the MBT, causing the mast to lower.
                            I do have gas backup.
Hopefully I'll be able to find the right balance between the suction and the inherent buoyancy of the mast.

                            SCIENCE!

Stores load completed. Reactor being fueled, readying to get "hot". Crew is mustering. After a 5 month yard period, the ship is ready for final trim, sea trials and Patrol of the Groton Submarine Bases' very own North Lake this coming weekend. All Skimmer puke targets consider ROE as "Weapons Free". SHARK will churn-n-burn!

Many thanks to the Admiral/Dept of WAR for tolerance during this period.
