    Looking for some direction

    Hello

Its been a few decades since I've built a model and all of those were out of the box.
I am a former crew member of the USS Seawolf SSN-575.
I have found a image that gives me the hull dimensions and other measurements that could
be used for building a static model of the Seawolf.
I'm not sure how to start.

This is probably the biggest hurtle to over come.
Getting started......especially on a scratch build.

Here is my opinion on this.
You have a subject you like.
It has probably been in your thoughts for a long time.
Now, you have come to that place..Start or Continue putting it off.

You say you have found a drawing.
There are plans available that hove some minor mistakes but have been used to build from.

First do the research to find all you can in the way of drawings and images. (photos)
Decide how long or how big you want to build this model. This will give you the scale to make measurement conversions.

Make a table of measurements and convert.
(If you have use Microsoft Excel, I have a template that converts numbers to scale.)
Here is a link, near the top of the page you want to click on File #1.

Once you have scale numbers, you start by building small parts and sections.
After making these parts and assemblies, you can start putting them together making larger assemblies.
In time you will have a complete build.

On this forum there is a good build of the Nautilus 571 that should give you some ideas on how to build from scratch.

The trick I use is to not try to build big sections to start.
Build all the little items and work up to the big ones.

The second this to do is, START.

As you go along, ask question here or the other sub forums.
There is always people willing to help you continue on your build.
And remember this is more than one way to build every item.
There is really no right or wrong way as long as you get what you want.
Some ways of building are more complicated that others and my experience is, go with the less complicated way.
    Keep it simple.

            Seawolf

The Seawolf SSN-575 enjoyed two versions. Later in her career she was outfitted with a section to her hull extending her length. I was on the Halibut SSN-587, and at that time the Seawolf was right beside us at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Basic construction of the Seawolf could be done using plans for the Nautilus which is her sister ship. If you can find photos these would help with any differences.

              Have you been to NavSource?
              If not, try this: http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/05idx.htm
              for starters.
The plan posted earlier also shows the difference between the two. It mentions in the side notes that the Seawolf was 10' longer and 2' wider. The bow difference is noted (and where the extra length comes from).

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
