I'm back, and the "Big Girl" returns!

Just a shout out to all my old friends, and looking forward to meeting new ones!

As you may or may not know, after a 10 year unsuccessful romance with 1:1 scale sailboats, I have returned to the world of undersea modeling and "Where was it??"

The 80" SEAVIEW is undergoing a complete refit, not bad for a girl of 23! The DeBoer USS SHARK will follow suit, and a DeBoer USS NAUTILUS was recently ordered.

See you here, FB, and at the pond!

        Hi Jeff!!

If we can and keep the new username, sure!

Trying to rally the troops out here on LI. Ray promised to renew later, the rest will follow I'm sure. We kinda reformed the local chapter as "NYCLI RC Submariners".
That was to draw geographic NYC personnel in as well.
It's on FB if you guys wish to link the SC like to it.

        Have a great day!

          Hi Matt!!

How's life treating the "old" ME? This old PCB Designer is feeling the aches and pains! (Why do I like 1/48 scale soooo much??)

Planning on posting a lot of documentation regarding the SEAVIEW Refit as well as the DeBoer SHARK.

Also, when I receive the 571 from DeBoer (2-3 weeks now since the order) I hope to do my first soup-to-nuts documentation of a build.

Learned a LOT of stuff on my hiatus with 1:1 sailboats (went through FOUR, now trying to sell my Pearson 323). I need to stick with scale models, much better $$ investment/return ratio!

Anyway, lots of good techniques to bring back to the table.

Since the main part of the SEAVIEW refit consist's of a conversion to "waterjet" propulsion, I'm building a test stand to test current draw/thrust between the new concept and her original drive train. Hope I get some honest comments from you once I post the video and results. I'll be able to test a number of propeller/gear combination under static load. BTW, it's all inspired by an argument of yours from years back regarding gear reduction. Why argue with an ME?? See, I remember! lol Never was a fan of direct drive myself!

One thing to note...WOW has the technology changed since played hookie! I see it's "drone" driven now.

So....in working on your new Seaview propulsion are you looking into brushless motors as well?

Actually going to try something different out of the playbook. Hey, it's what we do!

Going with a BILGE Pump "pump jet" propulsion. I so loathed the previous setup, the shaft angles from the WTC to the prop shafts within the SEAVIEW "propulsion tubes" were horrendous! Noisy and chewed thru dogbones!!

I am by NO mean a hydrodynamicist, nor do I care to research the complex mathematics.
I'm merely reducing the inlet pipe diameter by the same sale as this drawing I found online. A start at least.

I realized afterward the outer cowling is for steering......du'h, considering I should have known that after all the CG "About Boating Safely" classes I taught with regards to PWC's (Jetskis). Since I have yet to install the 2nd one, it gives me an opportunity to test both as soon as I finish the "Propulsion Test Stand" I'm working on. Maybe it will add something with the "venturi" effect. Maybe not, the test stand will tell. Energy lost, energy gained, energy transferred blah-blah-blah!
Here is a video of the electrical component of the stand.

                  Throttle Power Test

The actual stand will also indicate relative thrust, not in foot or newtons or anything, just a non-calibrated scale to indicate different levels between different setups.
As I do have the original drive systems, I'll compare which is more efficient. Granted the new system may not move her along as quick, but I may get more run time. Initial test show one "propped" motor (std 540 w/3:1 reduction coupled to a 2" 3 bladed prop) drew upwards of 5 amps in the prototype test stand, and the SEAVIEW had two, while the ATTWOOD Bilge pumps draw <2amps each. The SEAVIEW typically ran less than an hour.

All this in the name of SCIENCE!!

I'll post the test video when I get it running.

I understand Kerry Addington is rebuilding his 80" with a pump jet on his as well.

But it's in the que to be done after PROTEUS before the 1/48 688!! So call it my penultimate boat!

                            REFIT LOG: 2016-03-23

Alright, time to get into the nitty gritty as to what’s been actually going on to date, and where I plan to go. This entry will probably be the longest since it’s the first,

The primary requirement I made for myself this time around is to document, Document, DOCUMENT all my future builds. With today’s ability to take unlimited digital pictures as well as the plethora of free software (Google Sheets, Documents, Notes etc) to keep records with, there really is no excuse not to, and all the reason to do so.

I discovered that just this fall when I pulled the SEAVIEW from its long hibernation in the shed. As I started going through her, evaluating her condition, what was needed, what was wanted, I realized I kept encountering “Why the frak did I do that?”, “What’s this for?” Even “I’m not sure if this is bondo, clay, or snot!”
If I may quote a great line from a great movie……
Adm. Painter: Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan.
Well neither does the American Submariner, we have checklists for EVERYTHING, including getting Qualified in the first place. Old habits die hard.
                            You get the picture.

I began to write a long explanation of using Google Doc’s here for documentation and record keeping, but decided that may be more worthy of an article for the SCR if I can expand on it enough and there’s interest.

One of the first items on the SEAVIEW list is to:
1-Review and generate Hull repair list
                            2-Repair Hull

This will not only give me a “clean” platform to start with, but get’s the creative juices flowing as I kick into “design and planning mode”. Unfortunately, as it’s still a bit cold to do any extended work outside, the major repairs on the hull that require copious amounts of fresh air, will need to be put off until later. But the cleaning, documenting, and planning has begun in earnest.

So after all that, here is a collection of photo’s showing what I’m facing when I can get outside and begin refinishing the hull. Of course, in the meantime I can get started on fabrication of all the operating hardware needed.

As you see, I have a bit of work ahead, but that’s why we do this (I keep telling myself things like that…)
