    Disney store Nautilus disapointment

Not to sound like sour grapes, but some of you who have ordered the Disney store Nautilus may be in for a surprise when you receive it.

A friend of ours, Mr. Dave Simkins, recently contacted me to share these sad pictures. Hope they are not all like this one.

Take a look and see at]http://homepage.mac.com/davidsimkins/PhotoAlbum1.html[/url]

If anyone else gets one like this, please share you experience.

Well according to Fedex, one of mine is due this afternoon before 4. I'll let you know if it comes out of the box looking live David's.

As for Disney's return policy.....well just have to wait and see. Frankly, I can imagine David's viagra nose being the result of some one time fluke, but rather perhaps in the mold or resin used?????

It's here and was in perfect condition. I've compared it to the pic's I have and to Jim Key's 66" Custom Replica's masterpiece in my garage and the problems Dave has with his are simply not present on my first. Or joy, oh rapture

Mine has not arrived, but my brother and father got theirs but their front arches don't meet the wheel house.

                I got my Nautilus last

I got my Nautilus last night and it was broken. The forward rake had snapped off, so I get to return it to the Disney store, and order a new one.

So make it 999 in the collection now.

                  Heres my thought on the

Heres my thought on the Disney 50th anniversary Nautilus. I was as surprised as anyone to open the box and find the wheelhouse packed in the styrofoam as a separate piece. I thought I had received a kit. I unwrapped the sub ... and there on the deck was the misshapened raker arch hanging over the deck like an ugly fishing pole. In the pond below was a battery compartment. I placed the wheelhouse into its place over the battery compartment ... and looked on in disbelief. With no raker arch attachment on the wheelhouse ... the fishing pole just hung over the house like a bad joke.
Now heres the thing. This is the anniversary Nautilus ... the Harper Goff tribute. A fix for this poor design is absolutely necessary.
Since the wheelhouse needs to be removed every so often to replace batteries; glue is not an option. An easy solution here is brown sculpters wax. It is the exact color of the model, sticky enough to be used as glue, and can be shaped with a toothpick.
I first used a thin finger-nail of wax to attach the wheelhouse. Then I filled in the sloppy void where the raker attached to the deck. Last thing was to fashion a box of wax used to mount the arch to the top of the wheelhouse. Then use a toothpick to detail. The brown wax melts right in as you work it. You really can not see the added wax work when done. It blends in perfectly.
Final thought. This really is a classic piece. I am real happy that I have one. But the fabrication of this model was out-sourced, off-shored, and half-assed. This release can best be described as "Eisner disney".
Still, with a little bit of work, it is a tribute to Harper Goff, and the imagineers that once were the true Disney.

Where would you get brown sculpters wax? Do you think clay would work as well?

                        Kurtz, and others...

Ok I just have to add my two cents [sense] here. All I am hearing is that this model SUCKS. And still you guys are buying it like its the last thing on Earth.

What is wrong with you guys!?!!? Why are you settling for 5th best with this crap model???

Make Disney realize that you WONT just buy "anything Nautilus" they stick on the shelves. Write them and say "It SUCKS and I am not buying it. IT IS A PIECE OF CRAP!" and make them lose their shirts on it, instead of buying the crappy thing and then putting in HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS OF YOUR OWN TIME FIXING IT! I cannot believe how forgiving you are of a company foisting CRAP on you and you eagerly eat it up, and then turn around and use a forum to describe how to "fix it" and make it all better.

Do you realize what you are doing? Eisner was removed from the Disney Board for a REASON. He is an IDIOT! He figured guys like you would buy CRAP and you are proving him right!

Expect MORE for your money! I saw the shots that Jim Key posted of this monster of a model and it is not even remotely aligned when viewed from the front, the two salon windows dont line up [basics here people!], the rakers are screwed up, the prow is drooping, and the rakers dont even connect at the wheel house to name just a few problems.

If I have upset anyone I DO apologize but you all know I am right on the money with this one.

                          Hey there, This post is

Hey there, This post is about fixing up your 50th anniversary Nautilus and getting a hold of some "brown sculpters wax". I would talk about fixing Eisner/Disney ... but that kind of thing is beyond me.
You can get this wax stuff at any serious artist supply; problem is it comes in 10 pound slabs. It is used in creating bronze work thru the "lost wax method". Anyway, to fix your nautilus, you only need an amount the size of your finger tip.
So heres what ... I understand you guys have the capability to send a private message to a registered user. Send me a message with your mailing address and I will put some brown wax in an envelope and mail it to you. I figure anyone who loves the Harper Goff Nautilus is worth the price of a postage stamp.
Just knead the wax in your fingers until it is warm and mallable. You will need some toothpicks for the detailing. The great thing is that the color match is perfect; no painting necessary. Any excess simply looks like a rugged welding bead. It is a simple fix that takes about half an hour. And it will really make a difference about how your feel about the quality of your Nautilus replica.
The Nemo and crew helmets arrived ... highly recommended. They are not exactly perfect, but they look totally excellant displayed at each end of the Nautilus.
The organ is a bit larger than 1/24 scale ... but it will still fit thru the salon window in the 7 foot model after I cut off the stand and the pipes. Once inside I will reassemble. I always wanted to make a ship in a bottle.
Didn't mean to be so negative about the anniversary Nautilus. WBNemo did a great job. The mass production just suffers from some goofy engineering. Try the wax; its an easy fix.

                            Now my two cents http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_cool.gif

Now my two cents I picked up two of the models and am very satisfied with both of them. A third arrived with a broken raker arch so I sent it back. As for the pic's of Dave Simpkin's model from ####, the two examples I have do not share these defects.

I also am satisfied with my 66' Custom Replica's hull which Jim Key did a great job on and is probably the best large example out there.

I am also very happy with my Icon's example.

The only example that I've seen that truely sucks is the plastic example from Disney Tokyo.

So like something else we all have, that's my personal opinion.
