    sealing MDF for a pattern

    does anyone have a good approach for sealing in MDF? before i carve a pattern in a brick of MDF i want to be sure my approach is correct for sealing and getting a perfect surface on the MDF. any suggestions?

    I use automotive primer. It

    I use automotive primer. It may take a few coats, but it finishes up well.

    I also know that mdf takes latex paint extremely well. If you can get a smooth coat on, or get it sanded down smooth, this would be a cleaner and less smelly method.

      A couple of thin coats

      A couple of thin coats of PVA (wood glue) work well. Although primer works well too.

          I used PVA on MDF

          I used PVA on MDF as Andy suggested, but my version of Polyester
          catalyst did react with the moisture in the PVA. This was confirmed by the
          shop selling the stuff : *no moisture*.

          So, be sure to test OR be sure to dry the PVA thoroughly before
          using PVA and Polyester.

          I used Cobalt based catalyst.
