Anyone know a good resource for learning how to do weathering or is it mostly just trial and error?

I have only weathered 1
I have only weathered 1 model to try it out. I put a clear satin clear coat over the entire model. After 4 days of drying, I started the water colors applied from a fine tipped syringe. I dripped the color faster and wider if i needed a large rust pattern. It is actually fairly easy. Plus you can remove all, most, of any mistake right away with water and a rag. When dry I recoated with the clear coat again.
Looks great 5 years old.

Guys, guys, guys, if it's
Guys, guys, guys, if it's rusting you're after why simulate it when you can use the real thing?
For years now, I've been using my own method of applying REAL RUST onto enamel painted hulls without the need to over-coat with varnish.
Years ago, under my old kitchen sink I found an old, brown and powdery steel wool pad and immediately knew what to do with it. I mixed a quantity of the rust powder with water (and later with a tiny bit of dish washing detergent) then brushed it directly onto the hull of my model. I let it air dry then lightly brushed away any excess. A couple of applications may be required to get the effect you're after. Purely by accident I discovered that it permanently stained enamel and didn't wash off during sailing, i.e. no need to over-coat. Model Boats magazine published my method last year but you can have a look at it in my "Hints...." page at www.pier72.com
Trust me, it works!!!

And here's my completed Revel
And here's my completed Revel Gato, USS Flasher using my "Real Rust" method. It doesn't wash off during sailing........
The only place I used a clear, Matt coat was over the decals. Some of the rust even stains those areas.
Wait until I start weathering my next project, a British T-Class Sub!!!!!
NOw that's going to be RUSTY!!!!

I'm by far no modeler,
I'm by far no modeler, but a simple method that I found to apply some weathered effects were to simply place some paint thinner in a cup and add some of Testors Rust color modelling paint little by little to the thinner until you reach the consistency you prefer, the application can be attained in a number of ways, eg, eye dropper, Q-tips, etc. I've recently weathered my Revell Gato by darkening the light colored areas and by adding some rust as mentioned. I know it's not Museum quality by no stretch but good enough for my standards. Al,
