I found a WWII magazine in my neighbors garage and have on loan from him for a week or two The article of most interest was that of the US looking for airplane model builders to help with the the war effort by perhaps getting a job in airplane design and development. Below are bits and pieces of the article plus other items of interest from that issue.
"Model builders are among the most important members of the men behind the men who man the planes that are knocking the Nips and Nazis out of the sky." [This was before the days of political correctness. But our competitors were way-less PC themselves.] Back before the days of computers all the airplane development work was done using models and wind tunnels and people who were tried and tested/experienced recreational model builders were considered to be the best solution for filling the needed work pool for developmental aircraft model builders.
"Pleasant labor.... on the federal payroll." Development of new aircraft was causing a demand for more modelers. Only a few details of the job were presented in this article. Pay]
