Update 6/28/2006 Bill Marks - Bill leaving hospital in a few days

He’ll be leaving the hospital in a few days!

Bill is still in an ICU room—they’ve decided to leave him there until he goes to rehab, rather than transferring him to another room. He now is standing; he’s walking using a walker; he’s using a regular toilet; and today his tracheostomy cannula was removed—he’s breathing normally now. His chest wound is healing well, and he’ll be heading to Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, NH, either Friday or Monday. He will be there about a month, and he says that he thinks it will be “a torture chamber”! It’s an acute rehab facility, which means that he’ll have physical therapy for several hours a day. I will be heading there to stay in a motel nearby, at least for the first few days while he is settling in—it is an hour’s drive from here.

I’m busy getting his suitcase packed. He has lost nearly 70 pounds, and I’m afraid his trousers are going to fall off! I’m adding suspenders [braces] to them.

He is very cheerful and is his old self—he does feel as though he’s going to miss the medical staff at PRH, though. I’ll miss them, too—they’ve all become our dear friends after 11 weeks! They have been wonderful throughout this whole ordeal.

You’ve been wonderful, too. Thanks once again for all of your kind thoughts, prayers, cards, calls, and e-mails.

    Cheers and love,
    Pam
