Bill will be at Portsmouth Regional Hospital for another couple of weeks. His surgeon wants to be sure that his sternum is completely healed. The good news is that it’s healing nicely now.
Bill is sitting on the edge of his bed to eat his meals, and his appetite is beginning to pick up a bit. He says that this is the first time in his life that doctors have urged him to eat more! Nothing tastes really good to him—a result of all those weeks of sedation. But he’s finding that he wants more fruit, especially oranges and grapes. He’s also managing to eat eggs in any form, especially omelets; they’re very good for him, too.
He’s standing up now, using a walker. The PT folks want him to be able to walk before he heads to Salem for rehab. He looks great—I think he looks ten years younger. He’s lost over forty pounds, and the edema that he had in his face and legs is gone.
He gets very frustrated about how slow this whole process is. He’s making excellent progress, though, and he gets stronger every day.
