WELFREIGHTER BRIT MIDGET SUB INFO. - Welfreighter vet. Bob Quinn died.

Recently Bob Quinn, a WWII vet died, he was involved with the Welfreighter project when it was transferred to Australia.

The problems he and others were working on were those created by the warmer waters of the Pacific. The Welfreighter had a number of purposes. And the most probable one was to be used to transport reconnaissance men, to check out the beach sand and materials, fortifications and defenses. The reason that it's existance was so secret was that it's presence in an area would foretell a high probability that a nearby area would be invaded.

We recently learned the following from Bob's wife.

I have the very sad news to give you. Bob died on 24th Feb. 2005 very suddenly in the evening just as we were sitting down after dinner. He just keeled over and died no pain, no fuss, just gone. The way was great for him, after his usual busy day of walk and talk! computing then relaxing in the evening, but a hard thing to grasp for the rest of us.

I know he valued greatly the lovely e-mail exchanges you & he shared. Computing was his new love after he had to give up his boat. He was buried up on the hill on the 5thMar.2005 in the graveyard of the church that serves as a 'mark' for sailors returning to harbour -- most appropriate I thought. Remember us in your prayers occasionally. Thank you

In the past half year or so there have appeared many more URL's on the internet about this boat. You can see all of them if you go to Google.com and use the search term "Welfreighter." The more interesting of these are below.

Additionally, if you search the General form here in the SubCommittee's website using Welfreighter as a search term you will find two additional messages or articles on the message board.
