    Carmel Regatta?

I haven't heard any talk lately about the Carmel Regatta in 2004. I've heard rumors that it's not going to happen. Anyone know if the rumor is true. I did notice that the Indiana Admirals have a "Carmel 2004" picture on their webpage newsletter.

    Hi Casey -
    We will have

    Hi Casey -
We will have several Carmel '04 fun runs - still looking at a February date for an indoor pool - or possibly even an outdoor run - weather permitting. (Carmel is a snazzy northern suburb of Indianapolis, IN.)

The events will be open to all SubCommittee members, not just SubRon6 captains. As you have seen, we get a pretty good turnout for our events; 20-25 guys with as many subs is not uncommon.

However, since the pond area infrastructure (ie, the parking lot and bathrooms) will not be fully completed by this coming summer; AND since SubRon4 graciously stepped up to host The SubRegatta one more time for 2004, we are seriously looking at putting in to host The SubRegatta in '05.

We are at a bit of a disadvantage in SubRon6 because we're spread out across a HUGE 477,000+ square miles of Patrol Area (really!) We don't have an area with a good pond where there are more than a couple of members who live within an easy drive of each other to run a big event.

Luckily, Chris Campbell who is a SubRon6 / SubCommittee member AND the 2003 Commodore of the Indianapolis Admirals model boat group has gotten his club to volunteer to help us as being the all important local guys who can negotiate with hotels, rent tents and tables, interface with the local units of government and help handle the million other items necessary to run The SubRegatta that you have to be on site to handle. Without them, it ain'ta gonna happen!

If the SC Executive Committee accepts our application, this will hopefully give people from other parts of the country who haven't had the inclination, time and/or funds, to drive all the way to the Northeast corner of the country the opportunity to attend The SubRegatta.

Any questions (or if you want to volunteer to help!), feel free to drop me or John Schagane a note or post it on the SubRon6 area of this board.

DOESN'T GET MUCH MORE FUN THAN THIS!

      Tim,
I can only make this suggestion to you and the other SC members to ponder. Since the RC submarine hobby is growing and since there is interest now for a more central regatta, what is wrong with having 3 a year? East Coast , Mid West and West Coast Regatta? Providence, Carmel and San Francisco. I think there is room now for more than one show and no one would be the big show any longer. This way no one would be taking anything away from anyone as all three sites would share the name "regatta". This way our hobby gets maximum exposure from most of the country, instead of one time a year in a small part. I think the SC, along with the chapters of the SubRons, should get together and hash this around. The only problem I see, would be some people saying no because no one has top billing any longer. But, to set ones ego aside and cooperate with each other would be for the betterment of the hobby. I await your comments as well as anyone else who has one on this suggestion.

Speaking on behalf of the entire EC, we are definitely supportive of and are working towards having multiple SubRegattas each year.

If we do one, we are are going to try to do it right and we just can't do it this summer.

Convenient bathrooms and parking are a must for several hundred people that come to the SubRegatta. All those buildings you see in the photos are private office space - NO AVAILABLE RESTROOM OR PUBLIC PARKING facilities on weekends.

By '05 there will be bathrooms that are wheelchair accessible open to the visitors to the pond. There will also be a large parking ramp adjacent to the pond that is being built.

In the meantime this coming summer we will be having several fun runs that are open to all paid up SubCommittee members (others can come and watch, but may not run boats dues to insurance issues.)

            Casey,

            The Indy Admirals

            Casey,

The Indy Admirals Carmel 2004 Regatta is the 2004 Great Lakes Scale Model Boat Show and Regatta, a SSMA sanctioned event. Here's the link to the 2002/2003 event site]2003 regatta[/url] This is a regional regatta, co-sponsored by the Michigan Scale Model Boat Club, Three Rivers Scale Model Boat Club (Ft Wayne), Indy Admirals, and Maumee Valley Model Boat Club (Toledo). In 2002 and 2003 it was in Fort Wayne. Their plan ois to rotate the "host" water around the 4 clubs. A good time was had by all at the last two regattas.

We should be able to have some SubRon6 fun runs at Carmel next year. Or maybe in Muskegon, MI near the USS SILVERSIDES?

I like the Muskegon idea. I am a Michigander who does not like to go great distances to get to a regatta, and I am building a model of the USS SILVERSIDES. I know this is off the subject, but how do I join SubRon6?

First join the Sub Committee (if you're not a member already). Second, contact John Schagane at info@SubRon6.com . Send him your name, SubCommittee number, address, etc. Third, check the SubRon6 web site from time to time.

Where are you at in Michigan? I spent 5 years in the Soo (does that make me a "naturalized" Yooper?). Currently working in the USCG Civil Engineering office in Cleveland. The window near my desk has a nice view of the USS COD.

We will be having a fun run in Carmel in February (not St. Valentine's weekend, though) - in an Olympic sized pool if its cold, on the Carmel reflecting pond if it is nice. Watch the SubRon6 message board for details.

Be sure to give John your email address so he can send add you to the "SubRon6 Flash Traffic" announcements.
