Guys,
Did I miss something heinous or was the "Master and Commander" thread locked out because it wasn't "submarine related"?
Last weekend I was looking forward to a post from Steve on the film (just like "Titanic", I knew he would see it ASAP and post his thoughts). I knew I would get a reliable, well written take from a fellow submarine enthusiast's point of view. I found Carter's Melvillian reply equally stimulating.
To shut down the works because it wasn't directly related to submarines seems absurd. I go to regattas to run my boats with other submarine modelers. Yet during the bull sessions we chew up a number of non-submarine (and non-naval) topics. The fellowship is richer for it.
True, the topic was not overtly submarine, or sub modeling, related. But the struggle of men against the sea, and men against men on the sea, draws me to the movie for the same reasons I am drawn to submarines. And that is a great deal more exciting than some of the info that's come down the pike here recently. Call me a hopeless romantic but I can discuss the virtues of electronic speed controls for only so long.
From everything I observed the thread was innocuous. If you don't like the topic, keep clicking. Though I hadn't been able to reply, I was still participating vicariously. There were more than two people interacting.
Are Dave M.'s warnings about the boards coming true? Say it ain't so.
