    Fire on U.S.S. Florida SSGN

As reported in the "NavyTimes", 8SEP03

Officials at the Norfalk Naval Shipyard, VA. reported that a fire broke out during welding operations above the reactor compartment onboard the USS Florida. The sub is in the process of being converted to an SSGN at Norfolk. The fire lasted 10 minutes and slightly injured four people, who were all treated and released. The cause is still under investigation.

The fire did not damage any of the sub's equipment. The reactor had been shut down for 2 months with no release of radiation. Spokemen stated that the fire "will not impact the work schedule." Which began on AUG 1 and will last 32 months.
