I think I'm late to this game...

While I'm VERY excited to have started work on my OSCARII, I'm not excited for the real world that it may or may not be allowed to run in. First is the 75mHz spectrum that is supposed to be protected, but here it isn't since I'm getting a lot of RFI and the FCC just blew off another of my complaints for cross spectrum pollution. Not that I expect much out of them since when I worked at at TV station it took them 6 months to resolve a RFI problem with a broadcaster 3 miles away who's tower was crossing over to our licensed frequencies.

The other is 'terrorism.' 20 years ago you could keep a chemistry set and have a chem lab and nobody would care. Even kids were encouraged to experience science to give them a sense of what they wanted to be. Now we have teens being arrested for domestic terrorism for what the ATF described as 'a well stocked and well maintained lab in a safe environment.' I doubt I will ever be able to take a sub to a gathering farther away then 8-10 hours away because the TSA would so nail me for having a IED-not that I'd ever trust the baggage handlers with a sub in the first place. Whatever happened to hobbies and fun? Why are people who attempt to do hobbies treated as criminals now? My wife flies R/C planes. Not drones, planes. We have a trainer Cub and a good size Beaver that's just under the R/C flier's insurance guidelines and FCC's max weight. Now here is where is gets annoying-there are NO LAWS in place that say she can't fly at the park, by our complex, at the one down the street, or at the one where the subs will probably be going. In practice however, others we know have been told and threatened by the police for a 'unwritten' law that states R/C planes and cars are banned in public parks. I'm not that old (well if almost 30 isn't that old) and I'm not seeing a lot of people younger then me taking up hobbies, but whenever the Beaver and destroyers come out EVERYONE is beyond interested and amazed. Nobody wants to help construct them, but they are so amazed at the results.

I guess I'm just worried but mostly confused now.

There are several members who take their r/c subs with them when they fly to various SubCommittee events. I don't recall hearing of any problems with TSA.

I've travelled many times with my subs on planes since 9/11. It takes a bit of explaining as to what everything is, but other than that I have had no problems. Relax and go to one of the fun runs.

most of our submarines are too big to go in the overhead bin, so they will have to be flown as checked in baggage. that means you will want to get something like a hard sided golf travel case, and modify its interior to hold the submarine, the radio, and the extra tools and equipment in a manner that keeps it from being damaged while stored in the baggage compartment of an airplane. the sub needs to be restrained in a manner so the classic samsonite commercial gorilla couldn't damage it. that also means the WTC must be OPEN to keep it from popping open under the lower air pressure at 30,000 feet. some clerks may require that you show that it operates as claimed before they will allow it aboard. (too many TSA scares about fake transistor radios that are bombs i guess) which means that you will need to be able to assemble it and operate it at the baggage check-in counter, although the odds of you actually having to do that are low. none of my submarines use compressed gas for ballast, so i don't know how the clerks view the "duster" canisters that some use for refilling the gas canister in the sub.

at my airport, the baggage check-in is prior to the TSA checkpoint, so i don't deal with TSA agents when checking in my sub, its generally a 20-30 year old woman who shakes her head and says "fine" as her eyes glaze over when i start to explain what it is. then she waves me on.

At PDX they slap on the bag tags and make you walk over to the TSA checked bag area so TSA checks your bag in for the flight, not the carrier. Plus I've gotten more then a few TSA WAS HERE slips in those bags and items that went "missing." But I'm the bad guy for not trusting them. I'm not trusting them with a one of a kind sub knowing how incompetently they operate here.

I don't believe anyone said we trusted TSA. We have been successful getting our boats through the process. That's all. I put my permit in a hard sided golf bag. Works well. My experience has been the same as Tim's. The agents eyes roll over backward and let it go through. I don't like the process at all, but that's the police state that we have chosen to place ourselves within.

Thanks guys. I just want to get one of my 2 boats finished and good to to but then it becomes a matter of where I can run and what is and isn't allowed. I just want to have some fun and be left alone while doing it. After putting x amount of dollars and man hours into something I just want the reward of being able to let it run free somewhere without fear. It just feels like public property around here isn't public anymore and I don't really care for being treated like a criminal for just wanting to have safe fun.

As long as you don't bring along airbrush propellant for a gas-ballasted boat (ship it ahead or buy it at your destination), you'll be fine with checking a boat as baggage in a well-protected hard-sided case. Been air traveling with my Blueback in one of Jim Butt's nifty oversized PVC carry cases (inside a big cardboard box with other gear) for many years now. Radio and charger go in a separate transmitter travel case. No problem.

Another possible problem apart from gas, could be lithium battery packs. Not sure what the score is with that, but it would b worth checking.

Re: I think I'm late to this game...

I use 7.2v nickel cadmium and for some reason, 6v lead acid. Engel uses a 6v system for their setup and I'm pretty sure the lead acid battery doubles as ballast in the typhoon. My OSCAR will be using many 6v nicad batteries however because the WTC is going to be to small. I was thinking about changing the drive motors out with 7.2v ones but I decided against it after I looked at Engel's motor setup. Their reduction gear is a thing to behold. The one assembled for another project sounds like a blender and has a slight balance issue.

As for traveling with batteries-Hazmat for lead acid and size limits for nicad and some lithium batteries. Ion batteries have mush more stringent rules. Both my subs are using Engel's piston ballast system so gas isn't an issue, but the three brains needed to operate it might be harder to explain. That's another reason I'm using 6v, the TAE dive system only works on 6v and 12v.

In the event I'm ever asked to power up any of the 2 boats I'm sure I'll miss the plane thanks to the bolt on cover setup but I'm starting to like this setup the more I think about it.

it won't be as bad as you think... you don't want the cover snugged down. check in baggage goes in the cargo area of the plane. that is not pressurized. you don't want your WTC sealed. pack it with the nuts loose.

I'd probably never bring the Typhoon with me if I'm honest. At that size I could probably buy another kit with the cost of checking in something that big. Kevin had a great way of shipping me the OSCAR though, he used a cardboard preform cement tube to ship it. Things tend to disappear or break at PDX and our TSA agents are incompetent thugs. At one point PDX was (and probably still is) rated as the worst airport to fly in and out of.

I don't believe anyone said we trusted TSA. We have been successful getting our boats through the process. That's all. I put my permit in a hard sided golf bag. Works well. Speaking of that, when I was 5, my science project was a chemically propelled torpedo. Not to long ago a Autistic boy was arrested for having a chemistry lab and making low grade explosions. Four universities approached him to attend their school and even the ATF commented on how well his lab was setup. The DA still prosecuted for domestic terrorism. I think I'd be in trouble--a lot--if I was growing up today. Yeah, at that age I knew about HMS Explorer. Still, it'd be awesome to make a scale Explorer-with a HTC system. I'm not entirely sure how the ATF, Coast Guard, or any model association would classify it though. Explorer did earn it's nickname after all.

I know some people will get it and others will need an explanation, but the world is what it is now so it's we're not really allowed to talk science anymore.

I think I'm going to stop telling people why I need this part, or this tool from now on. My OSCAR is becoming a bit of a side show. Everyone is really interested in it, but no one is willing to help or (and this is a big one) knows anything about how to build one. I am really on my own I guess and I feel like when the boat is complete and goes out for testing it'll become an attraction which I sort of don't want. I'd rather not have to give a lesson on subs while I'm working on getting mine fully operational, but it is looking more and more likely that I'm going to have to ballast her in a public park. I'm just worried that something will go terribly wrong on the build to the point that it can't be fixed with my limited knowledge and skills. It'd be nice to have a sub friend, but it seems that everyone here plays on the surface which isn't a huge problem. I have a 1/144 Arleigh Burke (with correct ASW helo), a 1/144 Sovremenny (also with correct ASW helo), and my "flagship" a 4ft operational scale model of the SS United States that was a gift from my wife for my Birthday 2 years ago. I got her a few months ago. I'm not planning on lighting any of my subs (I don't really see the point on military subs since they only have running lights) but if I did, they'd be in good company as the SSUS is lit and the model boat club here does twilight runs. I'm just trying to remain positive and get this boat ready by the end of summer. At least my wife is a good sport and is willing to be my spotter.

You think you have a problem with govmint types and your Oscar? My Typhoon has 20 functional missile tubes.
When I started building this many ages ago, we didn't have to worry about launching Estes rockets in public parks. I should probably get a jacket embroidered with "Yes, I am a rocket scientist, No, I am NOT A TERRORIST" before I take it out.
