    USS Holland (VI) References

I am looking for references that show the shape of the casing at the bow of the Holland. In this photo you can see the casing extends forward of the bow and wraps around the hull to intersect somewhere below.

I have not been able to find any bow on shots, bow view plans, or clear profiles that would give the shape of the casing below.

In fact most plans do not show it at all.

I was wondering if anyone could point me to references that show the shape of this area.

"United States Submarines" ISBN 978-1-4351-4994-6 has a lot of photos of The Holland. I got it on clearance from Barnes and Noble.

I don't think there is a cast piece.
I think the door assembly seats on the end of the torpedo tube.

The drawing shows no extension below the tube.
I will take the photo and lighten up the contrast to see if can bring out the lines better in the dark areas.
      Didn't help.

Here's another version of the same (mirror image)

It gives the impression the casing goes down under the nose.

Here's a different shot that appears NOT to show the casing going under the bow. I can't tell if this is a photographic difference or a difference in time.

Someone made a 3D rendering of a Holland, I'm just not sure which one. I'll try to find more info on it.

I think that you may be thinking of the CATIA 3D drawings done by Gary McCue, who at the time was working as a consultant for Computer Sciences Corporation supporting Electric Boat. He created a 3D model of Holland VI as a demonstration of what could be done with the CATIA software. These drawings ended up being released publically through (I think) IBM.

I've been trying to track down a copy of those drawings for about 6-7 months now, but so far no luck. Some folks have attempted to contact Gary McCue, but so far no response. The closest I've come to is forum member "Giovanni" who has stated that he has a copy of the drawings, but to date has not come through with them.

Finally tracked down a copy of that CATIA Holland VI CDrom. Many thanks to Greg Stitz who provided me a copy of the CDrom.

Here are two of the 3D CAD images that show the torpedo door and the fairing (only) above it:

                  That drawing is so nice.

Just a comment or more of an observation.
The orange part may extend down around the torpedo opening on the flat area you have in your drawing.
It may have been a casting that encircles the open for the hatch to seal against.

Other than the photos here, I have no real basis for this.
I just think it would be easier to machine a flat seal surface on a cast piece than on the sheet steel with it's bends and rivets.

Still a very nice drawing to work from.

Interesting idea. However in this case, I tend to believe that the drawings are accurate since they were done while Gary was working as a contractor for EB.

Plus it looks like the door would seal just fine as represented.

Your source is in more of a position to have access to more and much better information.
I would go with the information that you where provided.

I really like the old boats.
I have had a line drawing on the wall of the b-boat for many years.
Collected as many photos as I can find of the three boats built.
I have a Skipjack on the bench.
I have small Gotland I have collected all the internal equipment for.
I have drawings from Kuckum Ind.
Then I think I will start hand making hull parts for the b-boat.
Plan is to build in 1/24 scale. So about 41"+.

I will continue to follow this thread.

I am alive and still researching John Holland, his submarines and sub design in general between 1860 and 1910. All my files, drawings, webpages, and other documents are intact. My current email address is gwmccue@gmail.com.

How's the big 32nd parallel Holland you have coming along, Jeff?

As some folks (already) know, I had a major flooding event during the initial trimming of the Holland. It turns out that the OTW dive module was not properly supported, which allowed water to bypass the o-ring at one of the sections. All that has been fixed (took me long enough to get to it!) and now that it's about time to set up the outside 'test tank' I can re-start the trimming process.

In the meantime, I rebuilt a couple of detail items on the boat. the biggest thing was getting the bow area correct in the area of the dynamite gun.
