New insights into the planning and decision making process for Project Azorian, the US operation to recover the Soviet Golf II class submarine K-129 in 1974. The Golf II, which sank in March, 1968, was at 16,500 feet depth in the North Pacific Ocean. The purpose built Glomar Explorer, together with a Lockheed designed and built "Capture Vehicle" was to retrieve the forward section (roughly 138 feet) of the K-129, along with the R-21 SLBM and warhead. The operation retrieved only a part of the bow (38 feet) due to a CV structural failure. A followup mission was cancelled due to the cover story being reported by Jack Anderson.
