    Why didn't deck guns rust?

How is it deck guns on WWII submarines withstood salt-water conditions, frequent submersion then re-exposure to oxygen, and they didn't rust to oblivion? You often see barrel caps being removed/installed in the films, but no maintenance or preventative measures beyond that.

    Tom,

What you'll never see is the unglorious task of performing the mundane and laborious preventive maintenance tasks related to submarining! We would never get volunteers if that were advertised!!! The deck guns were made of non-corroding materials for the most part, and had lots of grease applied to their moving parts. A lot of time was spent inport to clean, preserve, and lubricate those guns to ensure
proper functioning when needed at sea. US 5"/25 guns had stainless steel for major components, as well as copper-nickel alloy and bronze parts. Plus, the paint. You can never have too much paint!!!

      Like this one?
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
