    HMCS Victoria - drydock pic

    Hi all,

For those interested, including Steve Reichmuth who I think is keeping a file on this boat, the Canadian Navy has updated it's HMCS Victoria class website with two new and fantastic drydock pics.

    Excellent! I keep files on

Excellent! I keep files on many subs. Thank you Bob for sharing these.

Stern dry dock image shows the stern starboard towed array very well. The Upholder/Victoria's are in respect to sonar/weapons control much the analog of the nuclear propelled Trafalgars. Hope the Canadian goverment will use these fine submarines to their upmost, and spending more on defence in general in the global war on terrorism. Eh?

    Steve

      Thanks for the link http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the link Great Pic.
btw, in the pic that taken from her stern, HMCS Victoria hull seems to be not painted in total black ?

from what I seen, the lower hull seems quite yellow ? is it because of the sun or it is indeed not painted with black, any info ? thanks.

        I was actually there when

I was actually there when she pulled into Esquimalt Bay, which is about ten minutes from where I live. It was the first time that I'd seen a real submarine in person. Pretty awesome.

I've got some shots of her pulling in somewhere on my computer. I'll have to look for them again.

If I'm not mistaken, she'll be open to the public for tours starting sometime in March (at least according to the local papers). You can bet that I'll be there!

In regards to her mission, I did a little research, and it looks like Canada's submarines will primarily be involved in maintaining sovereignty of her waters. This basically means that she'll keep track of illegal fishing and drug smuggling activities. The old Oberon subs were used in the past to keep track of Soviet subs in the area and for taking surveillance photos.

There's a really good summary of the entire project at the Upholder Acquisition website. Check it out if you're interested.

          Tried to post a comparison

Tried to post a comparison of what she looked like before she shipped out of Halifax and after she got to Victoria, but it looks like the Canadian navy must have some sort of protection for their images. It wouldn't register here for me.

If it were here, you could see her "nearly new" look in Halifax, and her "pond scum" finish in Victoria. Actually, not too bad considering she travelled over 7,300 nautical miles from one port to the other.

A little bit of scrubbing, and she'll be back to looking like new...er...used...um. Whatever.
