    3d-printed "submarine" model.

just to show how far you can get with 3D printing nowadays.

Really interesting; thanks for posting. Here's some more information on the printer used: http://objet.com/3d-printers/connex/objet-connex500
It can use different materials in each construct, and the layers are 10 micrometers thick, so high resolution, indeed.
However, the printer currently costs about $600,000, so I don't think I'll run right out and get one....
The lower resolution Object 24 is a bargain at only $19,900. Materials run another $150-175.
    Give it another 10-15 years...

Technology is moving along quicker than you think. A sub £1000 machine shown at work in this video-

That one comes as a kit which you have to put together. Another team in the States has come up with a sub $2500 machine that prints with a stereolithography process- I guess sometimes you look backwards in order to go forward.

What really needs to improve is the 3D software. Most of it is expensive and difficult to use. I estimate in 5 years these machines will be below $1000, and you'll be able to draw out what you want on smart phones and tablets. These are the obvious choice for 3D modelling, because of the tactile interface.

Chad had his 707 completely made by a 3d printer and it looks great!
