Check this out! - New video-SSN-23-Smartcast Fish Finder

Three websites to check out. First, mine. New video at www.bobssubs.com in the gallery section of USS Whale,Helena,Seawolf & Permit.

More importantly, a new comprehensive .pdf file on USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23 that includes to the best of my knowledge THE FIRST PICTURE OF THAT CLASSIFIED HULL EXTENSION!

Third, you may already be aware of this but I just saw that Radio Shack is now selling a wrist mount video display version of the new Smartcast wireless fish finder. Absolutely PERFECT for rc sonar!

    has anyone tried this item?

has anyone tried this item? i wonder how it works in a hull or if the hull needs to be modified to accept it. also will it stop working the second the line of sight from the unit to the reciever is blocked--ie when the bow is low enough to cause water and he sub itself to block the line of sight sufficiently to interrupt the signal? is an extension possible to increase
that to line of sight between the periscope and the receiver?
if this unit is designed to be used floating on the water, then isnt this application outside of its abilities?

it seems that this is the same problem that comes up whenever we talk about a new item like camera.
and although they are used on a very limited basis. the transmission of the signal keeps coming back to stop us.

Is there anyone in the club with enough knowledge to cast some hope on these problems? remotely towed antennae?
    towed antennaes?

            Thank you Bob!

            Excellent info on

            Thank you Bob!

Excellent info on the future SSN-23 Jimmy Carter, and the excellent wrist watch fish finder.

Good price, good reasonable size, reasonable performance promised for the 'fish finder'. I like the fact it is small and already made for water immersion/signal transmission through fresh water (ad states 75 foot signal range to wrist watch receiver dangling on your fishing pole line), and a sonar pinging operating range of 100 feet. In 1/96 scale that would be a range of 3200 yards. Wonder what would it's performance be if angled forward and slightly down? Would there be anything like surface wave reflection scatter or such?

I love how it would be attached to your wrist, separate from the transmitter, less cognizance overload for the skipper. Also might be useful in finding a lost sub? Unless its transmitter was pinging into the bottom mud, I would imagine it would broadcast within 75 feet your whereabouts in relation to the downed sub model and perhaps guide you to the 'target'?

You always find the coolest stuff for us afflicted sub nuts! Thank you Bob!

              Bob / Steve,

              Bob / Steve,

I actually have one of these fish finders. A couple of things to note.

It only works on the surface. Once submerged it will loose the signal after about 6 inches in depth.

The water must be 3 feet deep for the depth finder to be effective.

It has about a 100 foot range while on the surface.

The signal will be lost at excessive speeds.

This device is more suitable for sub-hunting. Still a fun toy

              Cheers

                Hi Ben,

                Thanks for the info

                Hi Ben,

Thanks for the info before we plunk any money down. Did you have that with you when I saw you at Andy Haydon Park this summer? The Permit video I added to my website is from that day.
