I would highly recommend talking to Bob Dimmack of OTW about modifying one of his cylinders to fit that XXI. Bob's WTC would be the perfect match for that boat!

you got a whole bunch of detailing to do on that hull. Too bad 32nd P never got far enough along on it to do some of the work.

The only other boat of its type I've ever seen completed is Mike Dory's. He wrote a lengthy article on his build back in the 90's. I can look for the issue # if you'd like.

Hi, I was going to speak to Bob about it as all I have is the front dive planes so need to make the rudder, rear dive planes and the fins where the prop tubes come out. I want to make these and then take a mold of them so if they ever get damaged it would be an easy fix but I have never done this or have an idea how it is done, I can make the plug and that's it really so it was going to be a phone call to Bob to see if he could help. I have lots of drawings of the sub by the looks of them from the actual builders yard so they will be of great help. I will draw the deck and the lower flood holes and get them photo etched in brass, and get the gun barrels also in brass. I would like to see the issue with the build in it, would help me as I really do not want to balls it up! Cheers Tom

Making moulds is easy, making the master is the time consuming bit. Having said all that, if you make the parts from G10 epoxy glass sheet or even polycarbonate, it's very unlikely you'll ever need to replace them. I only bother making tools for parts I need multiples of.

When it comes to the deck it might be cheaper to have it cut by laser or waterjet than a photoetch.

Speaking from experience.....for a one off and for one this large, I agree that a laser or waterjet cut will be far more cost effective.

Let me look for the Dory article. I used to have all the Type XXI issues grouped together.

The last time that I spoke with Mike Dory, he said that the rudder and elevator on his model were out of scale to provide more maneuverability.
You are a very lucky guy to acquire this hull !

We have the back issues on pdf, Could that snippet be posted on the members only section?
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

There's a chap in the UK who offers a waterjet cutting service to model boaters, he posted up details on Mayhem a while back. Might be of some use to you.
