    Re: Hitec Radio

BD's advice to stick with the same brand (and even specific model) is very good advice. It's something that I too have done and it definitely has made my life easier.

re: using same servo brand as the transmitter - this isn't absolutely necessary, but I understand the intent. The reason I say this is that you may not want to limit the sizes of servos that you can choose from.

        Giovanni
Thanks for the link, I don't know what's up with the internet these days.

I'll check my options out, and as BD said, marine programming can (may) be a pain in the butt. I can live with airplane/heli/glider etc programming. Life's like that, right?

The thing is if I buy a aircraft transmitter and receiver, what type of programming/software should it have? By that I mean airplane, heli, glider, and sailplane programming/software. Which one is best suited for submarine use? I am MOST likely to get a radio set tuned to an aircraft frequency. The surface frequencies are sooooooooooooo limited.

        Thoughts please.

          Re: Hitec Radio

For all practical purposes the programming capabilities for any air/heli radio will be the same.

As for getting and using an air radio because of the limit to the number of surface channels.....don't. You will be in violation of FCC regulations. It will be highly unlikely that you will ever run your sub with enough other folks to run out of channels. Having a synth'd radio virtually guarantees that.

I would also offer the observation that it's possible to over-think the whole decision process of which radio to get. Once you decide how many channels you want/need....buy something.

            Re: Hitec Radio

The main areas that are useful on a computer transmitter in respect of subs are-

            1. Trim setting storage.
            2. Servo travel limit adjustment including servo reversing.
            3. Exponential control settings (most subs don't need this, but it's handy to have all the same)

That really is it, and really just about all computer TX's have those facilities. To be honest a bog standard analogue 4-6 channel set is adequate for 95% of model submarines. Go for 8-channels if the model has fore and aft control planes and a complex ballast system.

Any mixing is usually done onboard the model itself, not in the transmitter, although there are one or two exceptions to this.

              Re: Hitec Radio

              Jeff,

Do you really think I would violate FCC regulations? Of course not! 'I'm too young to screw up my life right now'. If I buy a aircraft frequency I will send it to Radio South for them to retune the frequency from 72 to 75 MHz.

I really don't care wether the radio is synthesized or uses crystals, since no one ever operates a R/C boat or anything else of any kind there at the lake for some reason.

              I need 8 channels minimum.
Here is the arrangement of each channel.
              1. Rudder
              2. Stern planes
              3. Bow planes
              4. K5 ( for main operation of ballast system)
              5. K6 ( for bow/aft heavy trimming)
              6. K7 (for fine-trimming of the boat
              7. Propeller 1
              8. Propeller 2

Note: the configuration of this may vary, as it depends on the model. I probably won't need two channels for the propellers. As for the ballast system I may only use two, not three, channels.

I took this to mean that you had decided to run an air frequency....if that is not what you meant, than please ignore my comment.

                  Jeff,
Would it be legal to use 72MHz if your operating a flying sub model?
                  Just kidding, I know better.

Norbert Bruggen's newest submarine model looks as if it could fly!
I'm considering building one similar to this in 260 brass sheet.

Ok, we are WAY off topic.

Didn't I write "Ok, I just need a simple answer to this question" on the very first posting? The VERY first, even the very first sentence. What's gone on here?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something.

The radio I mentioned on the very first post is one I believe is suitable my the Gato, since Engel's electronics do not work well with PCM modulation, and since the radio I said is FM/PPM modulation, it won't dysfunction the electronics.

Oh my god, I keep forgetting things! (I am not posting like this on purpose, my brain forgets to think before clicking the submit button).

I think that radios like the Futaba 9 CAP are PCM/PPM modulated, and if you pick PPM, you lose one channel. Short story, you get 9 channels on PCM, but only 8 on PPM. Is this right?

Also, is there a way to convert a PCM transmitter and receiver to PPM if it is just a PCM only modulation?
