I noticed when I went to the Russian Submarine links at Wayne's Russian site below, that the vast majority of the images have become unlinked. Is there some (easy) way to relink and restore all of this information? Or, is it "Lost & Gone Forever"?

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
Thanks, Jeff. Actually, even the images I posted there are missing, and I know I didn't remove or move them.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
Makes sense....well sort of, based on my experience too. I use imageshack.us for uploading my photos and on occasion some of the thumbnails seem to disappear.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
I suppose we would be looking at a major reconstruction project to retrieve the photos. Probably someone installed a new server at the Image host and didn't bother to update the links.
Maybe we should use something more upscale, like "Image Palace" or "Image Tudor Castle" rather than "Image Shack"...

If anyone knows of a free image upload facility that we're not aware of, please let someone know. That said, remember the old saying: you get what you pay for.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
I am seeing images hosted on postimage.org missing. I'm (now) wondering if these image hosting providers are removing images once they get to be a certain age.....

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
I think Jeff may be right; the material may be purged. I posted some of my Russian sub material there, as did Wayne Frey. The vast majority of it is gone.
It is something to think about as an organization. If we want to have permanent records archived, we may need to pay for a better photo service. Some offer virtually unlimited storage for $55-80 per year. Since we now longer have the major outlay of publication costs for the SCR, we seem to be in better fiscal health. Maybe a better photo hosting service would be a worthwhile place for a modest yearly spend item.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
I considered the Wayne's Russian Site department on our site a very valuable tool for reference and recruiting purposes. Since it appears that about 80% of the material has been lost, we should take future steps to insure this does not happen to us again. Perhaps get a Carbonite site or some similar site as a backup? As I mentioned with the cost of actually printing the SCR now gone, and our migration to "all electronic" now complete, it would be worth spending a modest amount each year for remote storage to insure that we do not have some or most of our files wiped out. Wayne's material was very good, and now we seem to no longer have it.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
If someone would like to volunteer to investigate what options may be available to remedy the photos-gone-missing syndrome that appears to afflict the free photo hosting providers, please reply to this thread.

Re: Large number of Missing Photos on this Site
I know in Wayne's case, he removed them from the site himself. He owns the rights to most of those photos and people were lifting them and then posting them on other military related sites. Wayne was not getting the photo credit, so he pulled them down.Regards,
Matt
