I had initially wanted both sets of planes working, but was advised there was no real need for them, and as its such a small space to work in, it might be better to not bother. So I wasn't going to bother. As for a pitch controller, I'll be using the sub in the local lake, where you can see the bottom up to about 5 foot out, so the sub won't under very long, so I suppose for a quick dive and submerge a few feet further along, there wouldn't be much need for a pitch controller....

Wait!....I think you may still need a pitch control. The best reason to have it is to prevent the porpoising of your sub. Much like skidding on ice, many people tend to overcompensate, that is why in some luxury cars have anti-skid devices built in. The same will happen (as I understand - since I am finishing my first sub) as you are sailing along, you may tend to overcompensate for the minor motions going on and it is tough to see underwater the attitude of the sub. The pitch controller can make the constant adjustments to keep you sailing alone smoothly. Some of the other, much more experienced, can either correct or expand more on this.

You are 100% correct!
That is exactly what they do.
All I am saying is I don't normally use them.
Not that they are not helpful.
I guess I like full control.
I turn the traction control off in cars too!
There's that seat of the pants thing again. BD.

Could it be you're just not the reaching critical speed wherein the hull becomes unstable...
