    Hull Cutting

Would there be any significant difference between a "U" and a "Z" cut?

I prefer the Z cut because you end up with only one non-scale cut-line that is visible above the waterline. And having it at the stern can even be under the waterline in most cases.

I would rather use the U cut myself due to the fact that I fill that there is more useable space in the lower hull, and it makes hooking up the bow planes much easier if they are to be used.

I guess this would apply if the cut is made above the level of the bow planes. But not in the case of the Trumpeter Seawolf ( I have for a future project) wherein the bow plane is located in the upper half.

I ask this same question on my Sturgeon, scratch built project and glad I did. I went with the z cut and am very happy with the way the hull halves fittogether, and still have lots of access to the bow.. good luck Jeff Jones

            Ahoy There Sailor!
The Hull Cut IS Purely Up To Two Things.
First, Will The Hull Form Lend Itself To A "Z" Or "U"
Cut. An Earlier Post Hinted Modern Hull Forms Lend Themselves To
"Z" Cuts Better. Hulls Which Resemble WWII and Post War Boats Lean
More To The "U" Cut... This Keeps Deck Detail Breakage To A Minimum.
My Missile Boat Uses "U" Cuts For The Main Access And Stern Linkage Access.

Second, Does The Hull Form ( Your Choice ) Like A Shorter Version Cut Compared
To A Longer Cut; I've Made "Z" Cuts Just Aft Of The Sail On My Old Skipjack And My Seawitch (1/48 Scale )
            And They Look Great.
