    New Japanese subs

This is the " Soryu". It is a new class extension of the "Oyashio" class. It is a Japanese design and an upgrade. It is dubbed the worlds largest conventionally powered sub at 4200 tons submerged weight. You will notice the immediate difference between it and the Oyashio class in that it has an X-tail. It is made of HY-80 steel, the same as found in the Los Angelos class. Crush depth is 1000 ft. It has a submerged speed of 20 knots with 8000 shp on tap thanks to diesels and a AIP system made by "Sterling". It also uses Lithiom Ion batteries. There are plans for 6 to be built. Two are in service, and one will be in service by March 2011. They are armed with the type 89 torpedo and Harpoon. This is definitely an ocean going boat. The advances over the previous class "Oyashio" is the X-tail, AIP, and an unbelievable 30 reloads and mine laying capability.

To compare this boat to one of its rivals, the German type 212 it is much larger at 4200 tons versus 1800. however the German 212s diving depth is much higher at 2296 ft. There are 8 in service.

Very sweet looking boat. Would make a fun subject. I like its sail over the 212
