The Sargo SSN-583 suffered a fire in June 1960 in Hawaii. Liquid oxygen was being pumped onboard near the after torpedo room. The line ruptured causing a fire and the detonation(low order)of two torpedos and the death of two crewman. To extinguish the fire the sub was submerged with the rear hatch open. It was then raised, repairs made and it was returned to service. Here are some pictures of her in service. She was a Skate class.

Just for your info this is a Sargo. Just a little FYI.

The same could not be said of the Russian submarine that suffered a fire on 11-9-2008. 20 died and 21 were injured. The Russian govt. has refused to give details or the name of the Sub!!!

            Re: FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!

A very famous fire happened on 4-7-89 to Russian K278 "Komsomolets" project 685 Plavnik. A fire broke out in the rearmost compartment and spread forward. Even though the bulkhead doors were closed it got through the bulkhead cable penetrations. 47 were killed and the sub sank to the bottom of the Barents sea where it remains today. It poses a danger to all by continuing to contain 1 nuclear reactor and two nuclear warheads. Because of its location at such a great depth some have expressed concern. In May of 1992 a trip to the sub revealed major cracks in the sub, some as much as 16"-20" wide. Also a 20 ft. hole was discovered in the torpedo room. In 1994 it was found that Plutonium was leaking into the sea from one of the warheads. So in june of 1995 a excursion to it resulted in the leak being stopped. The remarkable thing about the sub was its great deep diving capability, reported at being 3000 ft. It rests in 5510 ft. of water.
