Re: S boats forever
If this is the book I'm thinking of, that would be [i]War in the Boats] by William J. Ruhe...a very good read for folks interested in what life in the boats was like before the more famous (and air conditioned) Gato/Balao boats came into service.
The U.S. S-class has always been of particular interest to me ever since reading Run Silent, Run Deep when I was in junior high school. Hopefully we'll be seeing an S-boat kit on the market in the next year or so.

Re: S boats forever
Thats interesting Jeff, ill be looking for that book (Run silent, Run deep) as I have never read it. Can you give me a hint of where this model of the S-boat might come from? And yes I believe that was the author of the book , War in the boats.

Re: S boats forever
Mark,
You haven't read Run Silent, Run Deep?!?!? Shame on you!
There is a kit in development by a small group of folks, led by Matt Thor. I will be supporting that effort for the photo-etched parts (decks, detail parts, etc.)

Re: S boats forever
The pattern is already machined and waiting for priming/finishing. That will begin the the spring...
The boat is modeled in 1/48th scale.
The entire thread with the 3D model development to the CNC machining can be seen here. Just become a registered member to view it...

Re: S boats forever
For those folks curious as to why the different looking S-class boats seen in the photos......
There were 4 'classes' of S-boats built with different designs:[list]- Group I (S-1 class)]

Re: S boats forever
Jeff, Speaking of Run Silent , Run Deep, I just realized that I have the movie on DVD with Clarke Gable and Burt Lancaster. Does this movie do the book any justice?
