Blast from the past!

I thought I would post this with my coffee this morning.
I found this photo on RC groups. It is a drawing of a surface running 571 model from a book back in 1957. I specifically noticed the mention of the ESC.
But back then the ESC did not mean electronic speed control it meant escapement. This was an early servo sometimes actually powered by a rubber band.
You can see the rod that attaches it to the rudder.
This allowed you to go either left-center-right. Over and over and over!!
Ha!! Very cool stuff!! BD.

After looking the drawing over very carefully as a possible next project,I need to ask you a couple of rather technical questions. Looking at the sail I noticed the "Whatzit"!! Do you have any of these in your stockpile of goodies,what is the cost,and can you provide a detailed description of this "WHATZIT" for a possible installation in my new Type XXI,also should I contact Matt to give him a heads up on this new developement!


While reading this during my lunch I thought that I would like to take a ride into the "Burg"to get a "samich" from Pirmanties in the Strip district.Possibly we could work something out for an exchange of information and prototype of the "WHATZIT" in trade for a"samich" from there!!!!!!!

I made an R/C duck

I made an R/C duck decoy for hunting back in the late 60's using one of those escapement rudder set ups. Crude but it worked!

In addition to rubber band

In addition to rubber band escapements, there were electro-mechanical escapements which used springs instead of rubber bands, and allowed multiple functions from a single channel radio.

I actually have the middle one in your photo. It was made by Graupner.
I still mave the manual somewere too. I had it in my first R/C boat the Sterling Lumba Lumba back around 1965. It allowed you to go left-right-foreword-reverse from one channel. As I recall it made it interesting trying to run the big Lumba in our 18' pool.
In used to bounce off the sides a lot.
I know 8-balls!! That must be how I learned how to drive.
