    U-166 Hugh RC Model

    Hey all,
I drove my coupe down to Crusin' the Coast in Biloxi, Ms. last week. While on my way to Ocean Springs I notice a hugh German U-Boat model sitting on display by the bay at the foot of the bridge.
I came back later and took some pics of the model.
You may have seen this before, but if not here it is.

After getting back home, I did some research and found this working model was originally used in the movie U-571. After the movie was completed it was sold to someone in the area. It was later damaged by the Hurricane. It has been restored and now sets, as you see it, on display.
It is modeled after the U-166, A type IX German U-boat. The U-166 was the only U-boat to be sank in the Gulf of Mexico.
Just thought it was worth sharing.
    cheers,
    Mickm

      Thanks for the kind words

Thanks for the kind words Bigdave.
I built this car many years ago and have enjoyed it a ton.
It's about time for a new coat of paint but I want to finish my U-boat first.
      BTY, the sub measured 43'.
I'll bet that is a handful to launch and load by yourself.

      Cheers!

Great find! It's nice to see those studio models being saved.

p.s. btw - I'm pretty sure that model is of a Type VIIC.

          Type VII for sure, not

Type VII for sure, not sure whether it should be a B or C. The netcutter speaks for B, the turret shape for C. Probably VIIC, and somehow the archetype of a German U-Boat simply needs a netcutter just like the archetype of a German submariner in a movie simply has to machinegun shipwrecked people in lifeboats.
U 166 was a IXC, so it cannot have been modeled on that.

Really a great find, where would one ever see a U-Boat model of that size?! I'd love to see it in RL.

            ...some Cs had netcutters....though all

...some Cs had netcutters....though all were removed early on in the war.

              You can go here and

You can go here and read all about the boat.
