    Type XXI Hull ID

I would like to start out and apologize for apparently dropping off the face of the Earth. It has been over a year since I have actively attempted to do anything in the modeling realm, let alone any extracurricular activities. Due to various life circumstances, some good, some bad (marital problems, deployment, making CPO, Death in Family, Finances (these always follow deployment for some reason, refer back to beginning)) , I was forced to drop some of my more costly hobbies. Mainly my 1/60th scale build of a 688 class, and my 23’ LN sailboat. I have recently pulled the hull form out of the basement and dusted it off, and have attempted to lay some glass on the mold. This skill set has gotten a decent coat of rust over it, and my first attempt was not too pretty. I am confident that the 2nd layup will be much better.
Mylo, I am so sorry to hear about your Type VII/41C models, I know that you put a lot of work into them, and I feel your pain. I know that your 3rd hull will come out better than ever and you will be up and running in short order.
Nuke, be more care leaving the brow man! Come see me up at STSC (Bldg 88 2nd deck ask for Chief Fisher), we can talk about modeling stuff.
Everything else aside, I am writing this post in the hopes that the vast knowledge available through all of the members of the SC can help me out. I recently acquired a fiberglass hull. It is 1/40th scale (73.5” x 8.333” x 13”). It is laid up with a white gel coat and what looks to be 2 or 3 layers of 4 oz fiber cloth. It looks an awful lot like the Robbe kit, but it is not vacu-formed plastic. What I have is a 4 piece hull (2 tail (Upper and lower), 1 Mid, 1 bow) 1 deck piece (bow, the stern and mid are molded in), 1 CT, 1 section of hull from stbd bow (area under hawse pipe (just like Robbe)), 2 gun turrets, and 2 tips of the rear stabilizer fins. I have included some pictures. There are no control surfaces or internal linkages, although there are 2 shafts with plastic props on them. Anything anybody can come up with would help me out a lot.
    Thanks!

    Type XX1 U-Boat

Howdy - Welcome back home, The Type XX1 is a unique boat to build to say the least, I'd recommend (1) Getting this Book, The Anatomy of a ship, THe Type XX1 U-Boat by Frits Kohl & Eberhard Rossler. It's 125 pages of drawings of every detail you could ever want. Check with Naval Institute Press. ISBN 1-55750-829-1 Library of Congress Card No. 90-64374. Trust me your going to want to get this book. The Second thing I 'd do is get in touch with Mr. Douglas Badgley at 519-631-2564, Doug lives in St. Thomas, Ontario Canada I don't have his address at present. Doug builds the most detailed and best looking Type XX1 U-boats I've ever seen in 40 years of building model Sub. When it comes to Type XX1 U-boats He's the master. I know something of the boat my self. you can see mine under the title U-2513 in the photo section. Mine is in 1/32 scale so what I did wouldn't work in your scale Talk with Doug, he will set you on a trouble free course. My very Best Wishes..... Mike Dory

        Mike,

        I have that book

        Mike,

I have that book (wonderful refrence!), and I have also aquired a copy of Marine-Rundschau that covers Vom Original zum Modell: Uboottyp XXI and German U-boat Type XXI by Siegfried Breyer. Both of these cover much of the same material as Anatomy of the Ship, but offer some different pictures. Thanks for the contact number, i will have to give him a call.
