    12V Motors

    Hey,
I was looking at a email add sent o me by Hobby People, and they are advertising one of those gas airplane 12V starter motors for $17.

I had one years ago to start up a helicopter I had. If I remember right it was awfully torquey. Seems like it could run a prop straight off, without adding more reduction gears.

Has anyone thought about or tried one of these? I guess the big question is what kind of drain they cause.

    Anyone got any info?

      If you want a good

If you want a good torquey 12 volt motor for a larger boat, the very best source is to pay a visit to a local car breakers.

Look for the blower motors used for the heating system.

In my experience these motors are usually in the ballpark of 12 poles or more, which means superb low speed running with lots of torque and low current draw.

They'll generally turn just about any size prop direct drive without breaking a sweat.

They only cost a couple of quid too.

For smaller models I search out surplus Buhler, Maxon or Pittman motors, all of which are big step up in quality and efficiency from the Mabuchi type motors i.e. usually ballraced, lots of poles, skew wound armatures and winds to favour low speed torque as opposed to RPM.

        Andy is the one that

Andy is the one that turned me onto using these motors in my subs and I've never looked back.
