    Correct foam for building hull? confirmation required

    Could anyone tell me if this is the right foam to use in construction of Sub??

    Be aware that polyester resins will melt styrene based foams. Epoxy doesn't. If you use the former, you MUST coat the foam with a barrier of some sort. This could be an oil based paint or PU varnish or PVA.

      Andy yeah think i will go for craft 1 as you know sourcing foam of this type is quite difficult in uk and im glad i found the site.

      I still try B&Q but you know what there like.

        Personally I use polyurethane foam,

        Personally I use polyurethane foam, which is the yellow stuff they use to line loft conversions with. Unlike polystyrene foam, you can apply poly resin straight over it. I just pick up offcuts that are usually skipped by builders.

        This foam is much more common in the UK.

        Only snag with this stuff, is that they mix it with ground glass, so you need to wear some rubber gloves when sanding it else you'll have some very itchy pinkies.

        If you're using the 'lost foam' method of construction, then you should still use polystyrene.
