I received this from Jim Christley today- Tim
This is a momentous day in Naval History. It is the beginning of the US Submarine Force.
On 13 June 1862 the Navy took charge of its first submarine, soon to be called the “Alligatorâ€. A humble beginning to be sure this little vessel (47 feet long and 4’6†on the beam) was never ‘commissioned’ as was the USS Holland in 1900.
The boat was taken to the James River in the latter part of June and was tied along side the USS Brandywine with the USS Satellite charged with providing berthing and messing facilities for the crew. Thus, she became the first submarine in the world to be ‘forward deployed’ into a ‘combat zone’ (the Seven Days Campaign was in progress at the time).
It would be 38 years before the Navy recognized that the technology of submarine warfare had advanced far enough to begin what would become a continuous unbroken line of commissioned submarines in the US Navy.
We are three years away from being able to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the US Naval Submarine Force.
